Backpacking India 120/129: Cooking Dinner at Thaiphake Village, Assam, India thaiphake dinner

For those following my India trip, mr.hotsia, you know that I travel tracing the real lifestyles of Indian people, not flashy or focusing only on famous places. This time, I had the opportunity to deeply experience the life of the Thaiphake tribe in Assam state, Northeast India, where I truly experienced simple village life by cooking dinner with a Thaiphake family.

Thaiphake village is located in a region that remains peaceful and rich in nature. The villagers here still firmly preserve tribal customs and traditions. That evening, I collaborated with the homeowners to cook simple yet flavorful local dishes using fresh ingredients found locally, such as sticky rice, native vegetables, and herbs grown in their backyard garden.

Cooking dinner at the Thaiphake home is not just about eating but a time when the whole family gathers to talk, share life stories, and pass down culture through food. I learned that cooking here is about applying ancient wisdom practically, without ready-made seasonings or many processed ingredients like in big cities.

One of the special dishes I tried was “Sticky Rice with Thaiphake Chili Paste.” The chili paste’s spicy yet balanced flavor made me forget the fatigue from traveling. There were also boiled vegetables grown by themselves and a special marinated pork recipe of the tribe, which smelled delicious when grilled.

The atmosphere in the Thaiphake kitchen was warm and friendly. I, mr.hotsia, felt the sincerity of the people here, who, though a small tribe, have deep love and pride in their way of life. Eating food made by their hands not only filled my stomach but also gave me an indescribable feeling of fulfillment.

Connecting experiences with traveling in India

I have visited many big cities in India, such asBengaluruA technology city full of modernity, orMumbaiA port city rich in historical stories. But this time, it was a different experience because I delved into the lifestyle of villagers in Assam, far from the hustle of big cities.

Cooking dinner with the Thaiphake family reminded me of when I visitedNamchiAnother area in India that still preserves peace and naturalness. Traveling to these areas made me realize that traveling in India is not just about seeing big landmarks but about experiencing the real lives of people in each locality.

The essence of Thaiphake home at dinner

While preparing food, I, mr.hotsia, noticed the delicacy and care in every cooking step. Everything was meticulously arranged, simple yet full of meaning. I learned that Thaiphake food culture is not just about taste but about relationships among family members and the surrounding nature.

The fresh vegetables used were all grown on the family’s land or gathered from nearby forests. The meat was also self-raised. Eating food prepared this way made me feel the sustainability and balance of the Thaiphake tribe’s life.

The atmosphere filled with children’s laughter, the wind rustling through trees, and the aroma of slowly cooking food made me think that true happiness in travel is to pause from the rush and savor simple moments like these.

A private reflection of India

This trip, I intended to present another side of India, not in the mainstream tourist flow, just like I have shared stories aboutDarjeelingA quiet city full of nature, andChennaiA coastal city that perfectly blends old and modern elements.

Living with the Thaiphake people made me realize that India has charm in many dimensions, and a good trip is not just about capturing beautiful places but about participating in the daily lives of the people there.
