Backpacking India 126/129: Songs from the Thai Community in Assam, India Tai Phake song

This time mr.hotsia traveled deep into Assam state, India, where I met an interesting and unique Thai community known as the “Tai Phake” people. This tribe descends from ancient Thai migrants who settled in Assam hundreds of years ago. Their traditional songs clearly and amazingly reflect Thai identity in India.

I started the trip from the well-known Indian city of Bengaluru. For those interested in this city, mr.hotsia has shared stories inBackpacking Bengalurua technology city that hides many charms of local culture and cuisine. But this time, my goal was to meet the Tai Phake people in Assam, located in Northeast India. This trip required preparing for travel by car and various public transports to reach a village that strongly preserves Thai culture.

Tai Phake Village: Authentic Thai Community in Assam

Upon arriving at Tai Phake village, the atmosphere of ancient Thai lifestyle was immediately felt. Although the landscape and climate are typical of Assam, the music and language still carry the original Thai accent, sounding familiar. Most houses are wooden with thatched roofs similar to those in Northern Thailand. The simplicity yet warmth of this community made me want to stay and learn more about life here.

One of the most impressive experiences was listening to the Tai Phake people's traditional songs, called “Tai Phake song.” These songs tell stories of life, beliefs, and connection with nature through beautiful melodies and vocals. The music rising from the village acts as a bridge between past and present, clearly reflecting pride in their roots.

Experience the Lifestyle and Culture

While touring the village, mr.hotsia spoke with locals who shared that Thai language is still used daily. Traditional Thai festivals are held, including annual merit-making events with folk games and traditional singing and dancing. Interestingly, their cuisine blends Thai recipes with local Assam ingredients, creating unique flavors.

The small village market was full of colors from handwoven fabrics, silverware, and local products expressing Thai art and culture in India. I also tasted dishes made from fresh garden vegetables, such as sticky rice with rich spicy curry, different from Northern Thailand’s flavors I had before. It was an incredible harmonious fusion.

Connections with Other Parts of India

This journey reminded me of the Buddhist communities in Namchi and Sikkim states, which I have written about inTraveling Namchianother culturally and religiously diverse area in India. Learning about the Tai Phake lifestyle helped me understand that India is not only about chaos or crowded big cities but also has peaceful corners and fascinating rural ways of life.

For those interested in cultural stories and new perspectives of India, I recommend studying or even traveling to experience it yourself. The Tai Phake community in Assam is a great example of diversity and beauty in differences.
