Backpacking Northern India 17/45: Indian Fried Rice at Tinsukia Market, Evening Market Tinsukia, Assam
My journey with mr.hotsia this time takes us to a lesser-known small corner of Northern India called “Tinsukia,” a small town in Assam state located in Northeast India. This town is not just a stopover or transit point but a gateway to cultural diversity, traditional lifestyles, and local vendors who maintain their heritage, including local food with flavors that captivated me, such as the Indian fried rice at the evening market here.
As I stepped intoTinsukia Evening Market (Tinsukia Market)In the late afternoon, the softening sunlight created a warm and lively atmosphere in the market. This market is filled with small shops selling fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, spices, and inevitably a variety of street food stalls. I walked past the fragrant spices of Indian fried rice, which differs from the Thai-style fried rice we are familiar with. Here, they use long-grain basmati rice stir-fried with local spices such as coriander seeds, dried chili, and turmeric, resulting in a balanced yet distinctly spicy Indian flavor.
I chose to sit at a small roadside stall in the market. The exterior was modest, but the taste was extraordinary. The Indian fried rice I ordered was served hot, and from the first bite, I could tell the spices were fresh and carefully prepared. The oil used for frying had a fragrant herbal aroma. Paired with a strong masala chai from the neighboring stall, it made this dinner perfect.
This market is not just a trading hub but also vividly reflects the local life here. I saw women in brightly colored saris selecting fresh vegetables, children running around playing, and men in traditional local attire chatting cheerfully. This atmosphere reminded me of experiences I had atNam Chi Riveror even markets in big cities likeBengalurueach with its own charm and stories.
Traveling to Tinsukia is not too difficult. I traveled by train from a nearby city and then took local transport to this market, a route that allowed me to truly experience the real life of Assam locals. This kind of travel is the heart of my backpacking style with mr.hotsia because besides enjoying beautiful scenery, I get to talk with friendly locals.
If you love food and enjoy raw, unembellished local market atmospheres, Tinsukia is another destination I highly recommend. Besides Indian fried rice, there are other interesting local foods such as Tadoka, a local dish made from sticky rice and black beans mixed with Assam’s unique spices, and sweets made from fresh milk and pure honey, which I tried and found so delicious I had to order another plate.
I still vividly remember the lively chatter of vendors at the evening market, the bargaining sounds, and the occasional wafts of food aromas. If you watch the video I recorded inBackpacking Northern India 17/45: Indian Fried Rice at Tinsukia Market, Evening Market Tinsukia, Assam, Indiayou will clearly see the real life I encountered in this market.
In terms of tourism, Tinsukia may not be as popular a destination as Bengaluru or Mumbai, but its tranquility and cultural richness give a feeling of traveling back in time to experience the authentic stories of Northern India.
If you are interested in experiencing something different from big Indian cities likeMumbaiorChennaiI recommend planning a visit to Tinsukia once. You will discover the simplicity of daily life in Assam and taste uniquely distinctive local cuisine.
