Backpacking Northern India 20/45: Bathing in the Brahmaputra River

When talking about traveling in Northern India with a deeper and more tangible experience beyond visiting famous places, for me, mr.hotsia, experiencing the local lifestyle by the great river is an unforgettable experience. One of the most culturally and naturally significant rivers in this region is the Brahmaputra River, which flows through the vast area of Northeast India.

On this trip, I chose to take an early morning walk along the Brahmaputra River, a time when locals slowly but steadily begin their daily routines. There is a unique blend of tranquility mixed with lively energy.

Morning by the Brahmaputra River

I woke up at dawn; the air was still cool with a light mist hovering over the water. The fast-flowing Brahmaputra River is vital to the locals for their livelihood, including fishing, irrigation, and most visibly, bathing in the river as a natural way to cleanse both body and mind.

Seeing people barefoot wading into the refreshing water, some washing their faces and arms, while others took the opportunity to chat and share life stories unhurriedly, made me realize that no matter how fast the world spins, this way of life still exists. It is the true charm of Northern India, untouched and unaltered.

A Unique Riverside Way of Life

During this time, mr.hotsia saw children playing joyfully in the water, some holding small water bowls to scoop river water for household use. These small activities reflect the strong and sincere bond between people and nature.

There were also housewives diligently washing clothes, the sound of water hitting fabric echoing throughout the area. Some hung clothes to dry on rocks by the riverbank. This daily life scene is something I have never seen in big cities like Bengaluru or Mumbai, which, while charming in their own way, are entirely different.

Connecting with India's Diversity

India is a country with astonishing cultural and geographical diversity. A Unique Impression of the Brahmaputra River

What I liked most about bathing in the Brahmaputra River was the feeling of unity with nature and the locals. There was no rush, no chaos, only peace and a simple yet meaningful way of life. Every drop of water, every sound of flowing water, every movement of people tells the story of life moving forward endlessly.

Before leaving, I stood watching the sunrise over the river, seeing golden light sparkle on the water’s surface. It felt like recharging my life energy fully, and of course, I will keep this image in my heart for a long time.

Trip Summary and Travel Tips

For those interested in visiting the Brahmaputra River, I recommend preparing by wearing appropriate clothing and opening your mind to new experiences that may differ from other parts of India.
