Backpacking Northern India 23/45: Chai Tea in Dibrugarh - Street Tea in Dibrugarh, Assam

For mr.hotsia, this trip to Northern India has many destinations, but one charm I cannot overlook is the “street tea” or Chai Tea in Dibrugarh, Assam. This land of world-renowned fine tea blends the cool morning breeze with the fragrant scent of tea leaves in the air, making me stop to enjoy a hot cup of tea before starting to explore the city.

Dibrugarh is a small town not on the main tourist routes of India, but if you love simplicity and authentic local atmosphere, this is the place I want to recommend. I wandered through alleys filled with street tea stalls, where almost every corner had a small barbecue stove warming up to boil tea with various spices like ginger, cinnamon, and cardamom. The rich tea aroma mixed with the sweet creaminess of condensed milk makes the hot tea here unlike anywhere else in the world.

mr.hotsia enjoys sipping tea at small roadside shops, watching the city life slowly wake up. Tea plantation workers, vendors, and children hurrying to school all stop by to buy hot tea that energizes their new day. Tea in Dibrugarh is not just a drink; it is the culture and spirit of Assam that I deeply experienced.

I would like to recommend tryingMasala Chaiwhich is tea blended with each shop’s special spice recipe. The flavor is perfectly balanced and warm, usually served in small clay cups that make it easy to drink and fully feel the heat of the tea. After a few sips, you feel drawn into the daily life atmosphere of Assam. There is also plain hot tea without spices for those who prefer a slightly bitter tea taste.

If you are interested in seeing the authentic Dibrugarh style tea brewing, I recommend visiting the morning market filled with the sounds of bargaining and the scent of spices. Some tea shops place their tea pots on traditional charcoal stoves, using tea leaves from nearby plantations and local brown sugar. The warmth from the stove and the strong tea aroma made me feel like I traveled back to the era when tea was used as medicine and a true energy drink.

Besides tea, Dibrugarh also charms with its peaceful lifestyle, different from big cities like Bengaluru or Mumbai that I have visited.Bengaluruis a city full of development and advanced technology, but Dibrugarh is where you see real rural life. People here still travel simply by bicycle and motorcycle, and importantly, the tea-making tradition remains firmly preserved.

I also traveled to tea plantations around the city, which are famous Assam tea producers. Dark green tea leaves are carefully handpicked and dried using unique methods. The resulting tea has a distinctive aroma that is hard to forget. Some plantations open for public visits to learn about tea production, and I did not miss the chance to experience it myself.

If you want to taste authentic tea from Dibrugarh, I recommend coming in the morning or evening when the weather is pleasant and the streets are not too busy. Roadside tea shops are lively with locals and travelers like me sitting and exchanging life stories with the shop owners. Each cup of tea carries stories beyond description.

For those who want to watch clips and hear the real atmosphere of tea sipping in Dibrugarh, I recommend the videoBackpacking Northern India 23/45: Chai Tea in Dibrugarh - Street Tea in Dibrugarh, Assamthat I carefully filmed to let everyone experience the street tea atmosphere here up close.

If you plan to travel to Northern India, I want you to stop byDarjeelingwhich I have written about in a previous article, because both cities have fascinating tea landscapes and cultures. But if you want to experience the true simplicity and warmth of street tea, Dibrugarh is the destination mr.hotsia wants you to try.

Finally, I want to say that traveling in Northern India is not just about big tourist spots or developed cities, but also about stories and lifestyles hidden in small roadside markets. I, mr.hotsia, believe travel and food lovers will fall in love with it just like me.
