Backpacking Northern India 24/45: Dibrugarh Omelet - Eating Indian Omelet Rice

When talking about Northern India, many might think of the Himalayas, temples, or ancient cities full of history. But for mr.hotsia, this trip took me to a small town called Dibrugarh, located in the northeast of India. This place is not only about nature or temples but also has a special breakfast I will never forget: the "Indian omelet rice" or Dibrugarh omelet, whose taste and eating atmosphere are unlike anywhere else in India.

Dibrugarh is famous for its special tea and the river flowing through it. But what impressed me the most was the simple breakfast I found in the local market. There, I tasted an omelet that was not like the omelets back home but a Northern Indian style omelet perfectly blended with various spices. It’s not just an ordinary omelet but a combination of the rich flavors of Northern Indian spices, cooked with fresh chili, onions, coriander, and sometimes finely chopped tomatoes adding a slight sweet and sour note. Served with hot steamed rice, it becomes a breakfast I think of every time I remember India.

The way to eat the omelet here is different from elsewhere. Mr.hotsia scoops the omelet on top of the rice and mixes it with his hands before taking a bite. The flavor of the spices infused in the omelet adds a new dimension to the plain steamed rice, turning it into a lively omelet rice experience. This kind of experience is not found in big cities like Bangalore or Mumbai where many people go. (For those interested in Bangalore, mr.hotsia has also writtenBackpacking Bangaloreas well.)

The morning market in Dibrugarh is another spot I highly recommend visiting. In the morning, local vendors sell fresh food and ingredients, including a variety of spices that are the heart of Northern Indian cuisine. The aroma of spices fills the air all along the way. Walking around eating omelet rice while watching the local way of life made me realize that India is not just the chaos many think of but also has peaceful and warm moments in every step.

After a satisfying omelet rice meal, I had the chance to talk with the locals. Their stories are deeply connected to the river and tea cultivation here, similar to what I experienced when visiting the Si River in Northeast India. There,Samdruptse Statueand the beautiful Ngadok Monastery, which is equally stunning, and a small restaurant selling delicious Momo that’s worth recommending.

For those interested in trying this Indian omelet rice experience, I recommend going in the morning when the market is lively and freshest. Also, traveling to Dibrugarh is not difficult. I flew into a nearby airport and then took a local taxi into town. The atmosphere in the car was another memorable part, with local music and conversations between the driver and passengers, making me feel like I truly entered the world of India.

If you’ve read mr.hotsia’s travel stories in Northern India, you’ll know I prefer to explore local lifestyles and food rather than chasing famous landmarks because there is life, stories, and authentic flavors there. Just like the omelet rice in Dibrugarh, which once became a special breakfast I will never forget.

Finally, before we part, if anyone wants to see the full atmosphere and deliciousness of the Dibrugarh omelet, mr.hotsia has uploaded a clip on YouTube titledBackpacking Northern India 24/45: Dibrugarh Omelet - Eating Indian Omelet RiceI guarantee watching it will make your mouth water.

If you plan to visit Northern India, don’t forget to set aside time to try this simple but extraordinary tasting food. You will feel the depth of India from another perspective—not just famous tourist spots but also the lifestyle and flavors waiting for you to experience firsthand.
