Backpacking Northern India 27/45: DELHI Touring Delhi, India

When talking about Northern India, the nameDelhiimmediately comes to the minds of many travelers—and for me, mr.hotsia, experiencing this city firsthand was truly an intense and multi-dimensional experience. Delhi is not just the capital city of India... but a center of culture, history, and daily life that is vibrantly unique in the world.

I started exploring every corner of the city on foot, from the bustling old streets of Old Delhi filled with people, rickshaws, and the noisy calls of street vendors, to New Delhi, the government district that is more modern and peaceful. This clear contrast is one of Delhi’s charms that I fell in love with.

Exploring the lifestyle and fresh markets in Old Delhi

Upon entering Old Delhi, the first thing you notice is the scent of spices carried by the breeze, mixed with the aromas of street foods like biryani chicken, samosas, and freshly fried roti. I walked through Chandni Chowk market, lined with colorful scarves, silver jewelry, dried fruits, and freshly made local snacks. Most street food stalls were packed with locals, so I didn’t miss sitting down to enjoy a rich and flavorful biryani chicken at a small alley shop in the middle of the market.

In this atmosphere, I, mr.hotsia, felt like I truly became part of the daily life here. The constant bargaining and lively conversations make this market full of life and energy.

Visiting important landmarks and culture in New Delhi

On the other side of Delhi is New Delhi, which is calmer and more orderly. I stopped to seeRed Fortancient forts that still retain their beauty and clearly tell the long history of India, including Qutub Minar, a tall tower built in Muslim architectural style and a very impressive World Heritage site.

Besides historical tourist spots, I also visited small markets and hidden eateries in nearby alleys. Here, I tried hot masala tea along with Indian sweets likejalebithat were so sweet and crispy I could hardly put down my spoon.

Food and stories on the never-sleeping streets

Delhi is a city that never sleeps. I, mr.hotsia, strolled along the streets at night and saw street food stalls still fully open. People were happily eating and drinking, with local music and lively conversations filling the air. I love this feeling that shows life here is always vibrant and ongoing.

While traveling in Delhi, I also discovered a variety of foods beyond just biryani chicken or samosas, including local dishes likechole bhatureor chickpeas with fried dough, which unexpectedly became one of my favorite dishes.
