Backpacking Northern India 34/45: Enjoying Indian Instant Noodles
When talking about traveling in Northern India, many might imagine the chaotic streets, bustling markets, or beautiful temples. But for me, mr.hotsia, this Northern India trip has another dimension I want to share: the experience of enjoying Indian instant noodles to the fullest. This is not limited to any specific province or city but is about absorbing the flavors and atmosphere of street food I encountered while backpacking across various parts of Northern India.
The Indian instant noodles I mention are not the ordinary ones we know in Thailand but are instant noodles flavored with bold Indian spices, fragrant with chili and a variety of spice powders called Masala, which is the heart of Indian cuisine. Especially in areas outside the main tourist spots, I got to taste the authentic flavors of street food that I can truly say is "satisfyingly delicious."
On many days of this trip, I often found small stalls on street corners or in markets selling Indian instant noodles at affordable prices. But the taste and spiciness far exceeded the price. Sometimes it was a small cart with plastic chairs to sit and eat by the roadside; other times, small street shops filled with local customers. These places impressed me because I saw the simple and warm lifestyle of locals, whether in big cities or small towns of Northern India.
Speaking of Northern India’s context, I think of the diverse landscapes and distinctly different cultures, from the high mountains of Darjeeling, where I have traveled before,Journey to Darjeelingto modern cities like Bengaluru, which I have shared in an articleBackpacking BengaluruAlthough in different regions, the atmosphere and my instant noodle eating experience share similarities in simplicity and a lifestyle connected to easily accessible fast food.
Indian instant noodles are often served in plastic bowls or paper cups, accompanied by fresh vegetables or chili sauce prepared by the vendor. Some places sprinkle fresh coriander and lime to add freshness to the dish. I remember once sitting and eating hot instant noodles by the roadside in a small town rarely visited by tourists, chatting with the kind local female owner. She said this dish is very popular among workers and students because it is inexpensive and provides enough energy for the day.
The atmosphere of markets or streets with these noodle stalls is usually filled with chatter and the fragrant aroma of spices floating in the air. It reflects the daily life that never stops. For me, eating Indian instant noodles in such places is truly experiencing the real life of Northern Indians.
I want to recommend friends who love traveling to open their hearts and try street food in Northern India, whether spicy instant noodles or other dishes with unique spice aromas, as it will enrich our travel experience in a way unlike any other. And if anyone is interested in mr.hotsia’s perspective on Northern India travel, I suggest reading the articleExploring Nam Chiwhich describes sacred places and beautiful natural atmospheres, or watch the clipBackpacking Northern India 34/45: Enjoying Indian Instant Noodlesthat tells this story in depth.
In the end, Northern India is not only about famous tourist spots or interesting history but also about the stories of people and food that reflect the true reality of life, which I, mr.hotsia, have experienced and want to share with everyone.
