Backpacking Northern India 36/45: Acclimatizing for Leh, Ladakh, India
When talking about Northern India, many people probably imagine tall mountains, bright blue lakes, vast skies, and extremely diverse cultures. Today, I, mr.hotsia, will take you to experience “Acclimatizing for Leh, Ladakh,” a land many dream of experiencing at least once in their lifetime.
Leh, a small town in the Ladakh region in northern India, is like a gateway to pristine nature. The thin air and high altitude require the body to truly adjust before exploring each day. My first impression here was the unusual tranquility and the biting cold that chills the skin. But what made me want to stay longer was the beauty and the simple, warm lifestyle of the people here.
Adjusting to the altitude and different air
A key point of coming to Leh is to give your body time to acclimatize to the altitude. Here, the elevation is over 3,500 meters above sea level, with thin air and much less oxygen than usual. On the first day, I chose to rest and stroll around the small town without rushing, allowing my body to gradually get used to the environment.
During this time, I tried simple local dishes likethukpaa hot noodle soup that helps warm the body and replenish energy well, especially in simple restaurants where the owners greet you with friendly smiles, making you feel at home.
The unique lifestyle in Leh
If you have read about my travels in India fromJourney to Darjeelingor other cities likeBengaluruandMumbaiyou will see that each place has its own charm. But Leh is different; it made me feel more peaceful and in harmony with nature.
The small market in Leh is my favorite place to stroll because you can see local products like handwoven fabrics, silver jewelry, and local spices. The market atmosphere is not as hectic as big cities but full of smiles and friendly conversations. I tried local sweets made from goat milk and barley flour, tasting flavors unlike anywhere else in India.
Activities and places recommended by mr.hotsia
Although Leh is a small town, there are many interesting attractions nearby, such as the Leh Fort towering on an ancient hill or Buddhist temples reflecting Tibetan culture perfectly. There are also hiking trails I tried to help acclimatize and enjoy spectacular mountain views.
For those who love tranquility, I recommend visiting the temples around Leh town, which have a peaceful atmosphere and the chanting of monks that help calm the mind and recharge positive energy.
