Backpacking Bangalore 4/17: Chicken Biryani at Food Court in Indian Mall

Bangalore, or Bengaluru, is a city I, mr.hotsia, have traveled to and must say I was impressed in many ways. Although this time I didn’t explore the famous IT hubs of the city, I chose to dive deeper into the food scene instead, because there is so much to discover here, especially authentic Indian chicken biryani hidden inside the food court of a downtown mall.

Bangalore is located on the Deccan Plateau, about 3,000 feet above sea level, which keeps the weather from being as hot as other Indian cities, even during summer. Large roadside trees and parks provide plenty of shade. The environment is clean and orderly, unlike the typical image of many large Indian cities. Bangalore is nicknamed the "Silicon Valley of India" because it is a leading technology and entrepreneurship center in South Asia. However, this time I didn’t tour the IT zones since they are outside the city and require a local guide, which I wasn’t prepared for.

So what I did was stroll around the city and look for great food. I must say the food courts in Bangalore’s shopping malls are meeting points for locals and tourists wanting to taste authentic Indian cuisine, especially chicken biryani with its unique character. The fragrant spices blend perfectly with the rich flavor of chicken marinated deeply in spices.

Experience Eating Chicken Biryani in the Food Court

I, mr.hotsia, remember the first time I entered this food court; the aroma of spices filled the air. There were many chicken biryani stalls, each with its own secret recipe. I chose to sit at a stall popular with locals and ordered "Chicken Biryani" in the Bangalore style. They use fragrant long-grain basmati rice and marinate the chicken with various spices such as cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and turmeric powder, mixed with yogurt to make the chicken tender and smooth.

When the chicken biryani was served on a large plate, topped with a dark red sauce and crispy fried onions, I couldn’t wait to dig in. The first taste was rich, complex, yet balanced. The spice aroma spread throughout my mouth. The chicken was tender and juicy from the marinade, with some bites having a slight tang from the lime added.

Food Court and the Lifestyle of Bangalore People

The food courts in Bangalore malls are not just places to eat but social hubs for the city’s residents. You’ll see workers, students, and families dining together in a friendly atmosphere. The food offered ranges from traditional to fusion dishes. Even foreign visitors can easily access and feel at home, as if eating at a friend’s house.

Besides chicken biryani, the food court offers a variety of street foods and local dishes to try, including samosas—crispy fried pastries filled with spicy seasoned potatoes—and Indian-style fried chicken that is crispy outside and tender inside, reflecting the diversity and depth of Indian culinary culture in this city.

mr.hotsia’s Perspective on Bangalore

Throughout my journey in Bangalore, one thing that deeply impressed me was experiencing the real life of the city’s people through food and markets in malls that seem like just eating places but actually hide fascinating stories of culture and people. The chicken biryani I ate was not just food but a representation of wisdom and lifestyle passed down through generations.
