Backpacking Northern India 42/45: Guests and Snakes, Ganges River, India

I, Mr.Hotsia, am back in the field with another Northern India backpacking trip. Now I am on the banks of the Ganges River in Varanasi, one of the most sacred places in India and South Asia. The atmosphere here is truly unlike anywhere else in the world because every morning, I see many Hindus bathing to cleanse their bodies in the Ganges River, which is considered a ritual to wash away sins and purify the mind before starting a new day.

The Ganges River is not just a river but a lifeline for the people of Northern India. Locals believe that bathing in this river helps them escape suffering and gain abundant merit. I walked along the riverbank in the early morning; the scent of incense and flowers drifting on the breeze mixed with continuous chanting and prayers. This atmosphere reminded me of my past experiences worshipping atIndians bathing in the Ganges River, Varanasieven more

During my time here, I witnessed guests practicing meditation and participating in various rituals. Some walked along the Ganges riverbank, while some snakes slithered peacefully nearby. This is the scene I call “Guests and Snakes,” which seems contradictory but blends together amazingly. I felt like I was traveling back in time to the roots of ancient Indian religion and culture.

For those who want to deeply understand Northern India, I highly recommend a walk along the Ganges River in Varanasi. It’s not just tourism; it’s a life experience you can feel firsthand.

Traveling and Living by the Ganges River

Getting to Varanasi is not difficult. I traveled from Darjeeling, which I have shared about inJourney to Darjeelingvia a domestic Indian airline and then took a taxi to the Ganges riverbank. The journey is challenging due to narrow roads and heavy crowds, but that’s part of the charm I love here.

There are many accommodation options by the Ganges, ranging from budget guesthouses to hotels with beautiful river views. I chose to stay in a small guesthouse with a kind owner who provided great information, giving me the chance to talk with locals and learn more about their way of life.

Every morning, I wake early to stroll through the riverside market. There are many items for sale, including flowers for offerings, incense, candles, and local foods found near the river such as Pazal, an Indian sweet and snack with a perfect blend of spicy and sweet flavors.

Lifestyle and Culture by the Ganges River

People here live inseparably connected to the river. Daily rituals take place on the riverbank, such as chanting, floating candle ceremonies, and prayers to the gods. I watched these ceremonies many times and felt the strong faith and belief of Northern Indians.

Additionally, monks and travelers from around the world come here to practice meditation and learn about Hinduism. I exchanged experiences with many people, feeling that we are all connected through culture and belief here.
