Backpacking Northern India 44/45: Ganges at Night | Ganges River at Night
When talking about Northern India, many people probably imagine ancient temples, bustling markets, and colorful people. But for me, mr.hotsia, walking along the riversideof the Ganges River at nightis an experience that makes me feel a deeper connection with Northern India than ever before. The Ganges River is not just an ordinary river; it is the lifeblood for millions of people here.
After a tiring day of travel, I chose to rest by the Ganges River in an unspecified city because I wanted to truly capture the atmosphere. At night, this place is not silent like other cities but full of life, with lights decorating small pavilions along the riverbank. Locals sit and chat; some chant prayers, others cleanse themselves according to their beliefs. I walked along the riverside path where the gentle sound of flowing water blended with the voices of street vendors continuously calling out to customers.
The feeling of sitting and watching the Ganges at night is completely different from daytime. During the day, it is crowded and chaotic, but at night it feels peaceful and mysterious, as if the river is telling stories of the past through its currents. I remember while walking, small boats floated by with candles drifting softly on the water surface. It was a beautiful and powerful image I wanted to keep in my heart forever.
For those who have followed my journeys, you know I prefer to explore local lifestyles rather than just sightseeing. The same goes for this night at the Ganges. I talked with locals sitting by the river; some shared stories about beliefs and rituals related to the Ganges water, while others were vendors selling local foods such asrose-flavored sweetsandhot tea drinksthat help warm you on cold nights.
If anyone wants to experience this atmosphere, I recommend walking here after sunset to see both the tranquility of nature and the vibrancy of local life at the same time. Importantly, don't forget to bring warm clothes because the temperature drops quickly at night.
For me, mr.hotsia, walking along the Ganges at night allowed me to see Northern India from a perspective I had never seen before. It is not just sightseeing but immersing in the heart of the culture and beliefs deeply rooted in the lives of the people here.
