Backpacking India 7/129: Look closely, it's a hat, very big, and a walk through Hpa An morning market
When talking about India, many might think of the chaos of big cities like Bengaluru or Mumbai. But this time, mr.hotsia takes you to explore a different charm of this country through the morning market in Hpa An, a local market in a small province rarely mentioned on main travel maps. Importantly, this trip gave me a unique experience with a "very big hat" that is not just a hat but a tool that helped me deeply understand the local way of life here.
Hpa An is a small town located in a rural area of India. It has an atmosphere different from the hustle and bustle of big cities like Bengaluru, which I have experienced before (read the Bengaluru review atBackpacking Bengaluru). The calmness and simplicity of the morning market in Hpa An made me feel like I was stepping back in time. India here is not just the image of a tech city or economic development but an India that still firmly preserves its traditions and community lifestyle.
The very big hat... not just a hat but an experience
Before entering the morning market in Hpa An, what caught my eye and must be mentioned is the "very big hat" worn by the locals. It is not an ordinary hat but one much larger than typical hats. I am not sure what this hat is called, but one thing I know for sure is that it protects very well from the strong sun and dust in the market. For a backpacker like me, this hat is an essential item to carry.
I tried wearing this big hat while exploring the Hpa An morning market by myself. I found that it not only protected me from the sun but also helped me blend in with the locals. People in the market smiled, greeted, and chatted with me warmly without hesitation as a tourist. This friendliness was the most impressive part of this trip.
Walking through Hpa An morning market: the scent of food and sounds of life
The morning market in Hpa An is lively from early dawn. I woke up before sunrise to arrive at the market when people started bustling to shop. The atmosphere was filled with calls of vendors, fresh spice aromas, and the colorful display of food ingredients neatly arranged.
I walked past stalls selling fresh vegetables, fruits, and various spices that Hpa An offers in abundance, including fresh chili, shallots, turmeric, and others that are the heart of Southeast Indian cooking. I tried local breakfast like soft bread served with spicy curry sold at small roadside stalls. Every dish I tasted was full of intense flavors and fragrant spices that made my mouth water.
Besides food, I noticed locals gathering to chat and exchange news joyfully in this area, making the Hpa An morning market not just a place to shop but a community center where locals meet and build relationships.
Connecting with other travel experiences in India
This morning market trip reminded me of similar market experiences in other Indian cities, such as Chennai, which I wrote about in the articleBackpacking Chennai, IndiaThe morning market there is another place that clearly reflects local culture and lifestyle, including the diversity of food and spices unique to each region.
Even in Bengaluru, one of India's most modern tech cities, I still find time to visit morning markets to experience the real local life in another side of the city (read the Bengaluru reviewhere). Visiting the Hpa An morning market thus completes a diverse picture of India, blending modernity and tradition perfectly.
What did this trip teach mr.hotsia?
Visiting the Hpa An morning market this time, mr.hotsia learned that travel doesn't have to focus only on famous tourist spots or big cities. Going deep into small communities, experiencing daily life, and being open to new things like the big hat used in the morning market is the most valuable experience.
The Hpa An morning market is not just about goods for sale but life, stories, and friendships waiting for travelers like me to discover and understand another side of India not seen on maps or travel books.
