Backpacking Bangalore 8/17: Deliciously Satisfying Roti South Indian Food
Speaking of Bangalore (Bengaluru), the capital city of Karnataka state in India, known by many as the “Silicon Valley of India” because it is a major technology and startup hub in South Asia. But for me, mr.hotsia, sometimes traveling in a high-tech city like this is not just about software or high-tech offices. One thing that impressed me and I won’t forget is the local flavorful food, especially the roti and South Indian dishes here that are so delicious I had to write about them for everyone.
Bangalore is located on the Deccan Plateau, about 900 meters above sea level, making the city’s climate cooler than many other cities in India. Even in summer, the streets are lined with large trees providing shade for people. I wandered through the clean and lively small alleys of the city. The fresh air and the mix of local language and English conversations made me feel like I was truly experiencing the real lifestyle of Bangalore’s people.
South Indian Roti - Exceptionally Delicious and Must-Try
One of my favorite impressions of Bangalore is the South Indian style “roti” here. It’s not the kind of roti we see in our local markets, but a thin, crispy yet soft roti. It’s eaten with coconut milk curry that is perfectly spicy, or you can choose various lentil curry sauces seasoned with fresh spices, fragrant enough to make you want more. I once tried a small street-side shop recommended by locals. The place was simple but the taste was truly extraordinary.
There are also other South Indian dishes worth trying, such asIdliSoft white rice cakes served with spicy curry sauce,DosaCrispy soybean crepes topped with seasoned potatoes, andVadaCrispy fried snacks eaten with various complementary sauces. I, mr.hotsia, can tell you that South Indian food in Bangalore is fresh and spicy, with flavors that really awaken your appetite at every meal.
Popular Eating Spots in Bangalore
If you want to taste authentic South Indian food in Bangalore, I recommend exploring aroundJayanagaror the area ofVV Puram Food Streetwhich is a hub of local eateries offering a variety of dishes, from famous roti shops to South Indian soy milk and desserts. The atmosphere here is lively and locals frequently visit. I had conversations with several shop owners who explained that making South Indian food requires careful attention to spices and unique recipes, giving the dishes a distinctive flavor unlike any other.
Also, if you like chicken biryani, you can try it here as well. Bangalore is a city with diverse food cultures, but South Indian cuisine here stands out and has become one of the highlights for travelers like me, mr.hotsia, who want to try something special at every meal.
Walking Around Bangalore City
Besides food, I also walked around the city filled with parks and large trees providing shade all along the way. When I visited, the weather was pleasant, making city walks easy and relaxing. I spent time resting in several parks here, feeling relaxed and truly observing the lifestyle of Bangalore’s residents.
If anyone is interested in technology and wants to know more about this city, I have written articles and travel guides about Bangalore from various perspectives.
