Ancient Kitchen: Thai People in India Assam (Assam) by mr.hotsia

When talking about India, many people often think of the chaos of big cities like Mumbai or Bangalore, but this time mr.hotsia invites everyone to explore the Assam region in Northeast India. This place is not only rich in nature and diverse cultures but also home to the “Thai people in India” descended from Tai Phake. This is an ancient kitchen hiding stories of flavors and lifestyles of ancient Thai people amidst a unique land.

Traveling to this region is not easy. mr.hotsia chose to fly to a nearby main city first, then continued by car to the Tai Phake village community that still preserves traditional ways of life. The route passes through lush forests and complex large rivers. The scenery reminds one of the nature in Northern Thailand, but here the Indian atmosphere blends perfectly.

An Ancient Kitchen That Still Holds True Thai Essence in Assam

Who would believe that the food cooked in the Tai Phake village would have flavors and ingredients familiar to us Thais? mr.hotsia had the chance to sit and eat with the locals here. Most dishes still use pandan sticky rice like back home. There are dried fish dishes using freshwater fish from local rivers and fresh vegetables grown in home gardens.

One must-try dish is “Tai Phake Biryani,” which uses sticky rice mixed with local spices, similar to Indian chicken biryani but less spicy and fragrant with ancient Thai herbs. Served with chili paste made from dried chilies and local herbs, the flavor is so delicious that mr.hotsia had to ask for another plate.

Besides food, the cooking methods of Thai people in Assam reflect a simple lifestyle and sustainable reliance on nature. mr.hotsia saw the use of clay pots and traditional stoves still in daily use. Each house has a small herb and vegetable garden for personal use, and exchanging ingredients within the community is common.

Thai Lifestyles and Culture in a Distant Land

The Thai community in Assam still preserves their language and traditions passed down through generations. mr.hotsia heard stories from elders about their roots connected to the Tai ethnic groups in Thailand and Laos. Traditional Thai attire during festivals or religious ceremonies blending Hindu and local Buddhist elements is a rare sight elsewhere.

Visiting these villages made mr.hotsia feel like traveling back in time, witnessing the bond between people and land, a simple life full of warmth. Though far from home, Thai identity remains vibrant in every moment here.

Connecting to a Deep Indian Travel Experience

On this trip, mr.hotsia also had the chance to visit important nearby sites and nature, such as a visit to the Brahmaputra River withSamdruptse StatueandNgadok Monasterywhich are peaceful and beautiful religious sites near the Thai community in Assam, allowing a true experience of the cultural diversity of Northeast India.

For those interested in deep travel in India, not just big cities but also small communities with fascinating stories, mr.hotsia recommends exploring this area. You will discover an ancient kitchen full of Thai flavors and atmosphere in a distant land where Thai history and culture live uniquely.
