Indian Fermented Fish and the Tai Pake Thai Community in Assam: An Extraordinary Journey of mr.hotsia

Once in my travel life, mr.hotsia took himself to a land many might never have heard of – Assam, India. This place is not only known for its mountains, rivers, and beautiful nature but also for the story of the Thai community hidden in the Tai Pake village, something I had never imagined finding in India.

Assam is located in northeastern India, famous for the Brahmaputra River and surrounding mountains. For mr.hotsia, this visit was a discovery of a deeply blended culture between the Tai Pake people and the local Indian lifestyle. What impressed me most was the “Indian fermented fish,” which is not the ordinary fermented fish we know in Thailand but a secret recipe unique to the Tai Pake people in this village.

Tai Pake Village: Thai Way of Life in Assam

Upon entering Tai Pake village, I felt the warmth and friendliness of the villagers who still firmly preserve the Thai language, culture, and traditions. Even though they have been far from their homeland for many generations, they still speak Tai Pake language, which sounds somewhat similar to certain Thai dialects.

One highlight of this visit was witnessing the traditional process of making fermented fish using fresh ingredients from the local river, such as small fish caught in the Brahmaputra River. The fermentation involves local spices different from Thai fermented fish. I tasted it with hot steamed rice prepared by the host. The Indian fermented fish had a rich flavor and a unique aroma blending sourness and saltiness perfectly. It was a rare taste experience.

Interesting Lifestyle and Culture of the Tai Pake People

Besides food, I had the chance to join daily activities of the Tai Pake people, such as traditional farming, wearing brightly colored handwoven fabrics, and folk games passed down continuously. I found that the people here have a deep connection with nature and water, consistent with the lifestyle of Buddhists in nearby areas likeNam Chiwhich I have described in a previous article.

Another fascinating aspect is that the Tai Pake community holds ceremonies and festivals combining Thai traditions with local Indian beliefs. This expresses Thai identity in India harmoniously, showing cultural diversity that does not conflict but complements each other.

Local Markets and Indian Flavors in Assam

After enjoying the Tai Pake fermented fish, I explored local markets in Assam, which are full of fresh ingredients like vegetables, fruits, and spices used in North-East Indian cooking. The markets are lively and filled with the aroma of spices, reminding me of times walking through markets in big cities likeBengaluruorMumbaibut here the atmosphere feels much simpler and warmer.

I tried unique local dishes such as Assam-style biryani and curries using fermented fish as a main ingredient. Unlike South Indian or big city curries that are very spicy, the food here is mild yet flavorful, suitable for those who enjoy less intense but still rich tastes.

Travel and Tips from mr.hotsia

Traveling to Assam is not difficult as there are several main airports connected to major Indian cities like Kolkata or nearby cities I have visited before,DarjeelingUsing local transport or hiring experienced guides will make the journey safer and more convenient.

For those who love cultural travel and local food tasting, I recommend visiting Tai Pake village in Assam. Besides learning a unique culture, you will experience a charming and impressive Thai identity abroad.
