Thai Temple in India Assam (Assam): Memories and Lifestyles of the Tai People in a Distant Land

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. I had the chance to travel to Assam state in northeastern India, a land many may not be familiar with. But for Thai people, especially the Tai Phake or Tai Pake group living here, the Thai temple in Assam is like a spiritual center and a second home. I will take you to experience the real atmosphere, lifestyle, and charm of this Thai temple in India.

Journey to Assam State and Cultural Diversity

Assam is a state located in the northeastern region of India, with the Brahmaputra River flowing through it. It has rich natural resources and is home to many ethnic minorities, especially the Tai people who call themselves “Tai Phake” or “Tai Pake,” a subgroup of Tai who migrated from Thailand and Laos in the past. The Thai temple in Assam serves as a religious and cultural center for Thai people in India to preserve their heritage and Thai spirit amidst the ethnic diversity of India.

Atmosphere of the Thai Temple in Assam: A Lifestyle Connected to Homeland

When I entered the Thai temple in Assam, the scent of incense and fragrant flowers filled the area. I saw monks dressed in bright yellow robes chatting warmly with locals who came to make merit. That day, I witnessed religious ceremonies that impressively preserved Thai traditions, even though it is thousands of kilometers away from Thailand.

This temple is not just a place of worship but also a cultural hub, offering Thai language classes, Thai music lessons, and organizing traditional festivals that help the Tai community in Assam maintain their identity. I spoke with many people here who said that being at the temple felt like coming home, bringing warmth and a true connection to their roots.

Markets and Thai Flavors in Assam

After visiting the temple, I wandered through a small market around it filled with shops selling Thai-style food and goods brought by the Tai people in India. The food here includes sticky rice, Moo Yor (Vietnamese-style pork sausage), Sai Ua (northern Thai sausage), and Thai desserts that are hard to find in India. There are also local Indian dishes with bold flavors to try.

I didn’t miss tasting the chicken biryani with its rich spices, full of Indian flavors blended with the warm feeling of familiar Thai food, reminding me of a trip I once took.BengaluruThere, I also enjoyed authentic Indian chicken biryani, but in Assam, it has a special touch infused with the Tai spirit.

Travel and Convenience in Assam

For those interested in visiting Assam, most prefer to travel through major cities like Kolkata or other northeastern Indian cities, then continue by car or plane directly to Assam. I traveled from Kolkata to Bagdogra Airport, then by car to a nearby destination before taking local transport to the temple and Tai community here.

Roads in Assam can be less comfortable than in big cities, but what you gain is tranquility and an authentic experience of local life. This is a unique experience not found in typical tourism. Thai Temple in Assam: A Cultural Link and Pride of the Tai People

The Thai temple in Assam is not only a religious site but also an important cultural link for the Tai people in India. It is a place that makes Thai people in a distant land feel at home and firmly preserve their Thai roots despite being far from Thailand.

For me, mr.hotsia, visiting this temple and community was a great opportunity to deeply understand the life of Thai people abroad and witness the strength of Thai culture that remains vibrant even overseas.
