Thai Ethnic Group in India: Discovering the Lifestyle and Roots in Assam

I, mr.hotsia, recently had the chance to travel to Assam state in Northeast India, a land rich in cultural and ethnic diversity. One special aspect of Assam that I never expected was experiencing a community with roots remarkably similar to ours—the “Thai ethnic group in India,” locally known as Tai Phake or Tai Phake, a Tai group that migrated and settled in Assam since ancient times.

This journey not only took mr.hotsia to experience Assam’s lush landscapes but also into vibrant local markets filled with the colorful sights and fragrant spices of India blended surprisingly with Tai culture. The markets here are lively, rivaling those in big cities like Bengaluru or Mumbai, which I have previously written about (if interested, you can readBackpacking BengaluruorBackpacking Mumbai)

Lifestyle of the Thai Ethnic Group in Assam

The Tai Phake in Assam have clearly preserved their culture, traditions, and language despite being far from their Southeast Asian homeland. I had the opportunity to talk with locals who shared that they still use a language similar to ancient Thai and continue traditional agriculture, growing rice and local vegetables, as well as making fermented fish and other pickled products surprisingly similar to Thai culture.

In the Tai Phake village, I saw traditional wooden houses raised on stilts with thatched roofs and a simple yet warm lifestyle. They hold festivals similar to our Songkran, with unique folk games, singing, and dancing distinctive to the Tai people in India. I also tried local dishes made from local ingredients, such as sticky rice with fermented fish chili paste and pickled vegetables that tasted incredibly like home.

Food and Markets: Thai Flavors in Assam

One of my favorite experiences on this trip was tasting food with rich flavors and the fragrant spices of India combined with Tai cooking methods. From biryani cooked with local herbs to signature dishes of the Tai Phake using fresh local ingredients. I also strolled through local markets selling a variety of fresh and dried goods, including rice, fresh turmeric, spices, and local vegetables.

The markets here are bustling and offer a distinctly different atmosphere from big city markets like Bengaluru or Chennai (which I have described inBackpacking Chennai). Additionally, I found snack shops offering Tai-style menus such as “sticky rice with mango” and “fermented fish chili paste” that reminded me a lot of home.

Travel and Access to the Thai Ethnic Group in Assam

Traveling to Assam, although it lacks major airports or central cities like Bengaluru or Mumbai, is convenient from nearby big cities such as Kolkata or from Dibrugarh Airport, where I once stayed at a hotel and shared my experience of Indian breakfast there inBackpacking North India 6/45

From the airport or main train stations in Assam, you need to take a car or jeep recommended by locals to reach the Tai Phake villages. Having a local guide helps ensure safe travel and a better understanding of the culture. I chose this method myself, which truly opened new perspectives for me.

Connecting the Old and New Worlds in Assam

Visiting the Thai ethnic group in Assam allowed mr.hotsia to see the cultural connections between Thai culture and distant ethnic groups. Experiencing their lifestyle and the still abundant nature was a unique journey reflecting the deep human connections across different parts of the world.

If you enjoy traveling beyond big cities and want to learn about authentic cultures and lifestyles, I recommend experiencing Assam. It will show you another side of India filled with charm and hidden Thai influences. Finally, my journey in Assam not only revealed nature and lifestyles but also helped me understand the cultural diversity and connections of people far apart yet sharing surprisingly close roots. This place is another destination mr.hotsia invites everyone to visit and experience firsthand.
