Unique Lullabies of Thai People in India Assam (Assam)

This journey of mine, mr.hotsia, takes you to a corner of India that many may not be familiar with: Assam Province (Assam), located in the northeast of India. A land rich in cultural diversity and long history. But what excites and impresses me is not just the nature or temples, but the “unique lullabies” of a group of Thai people living here peacefully.

You might wonder how Thai people can be in India. In fact, Assam is home to the Tai Phake or Tai Pake Thai ethnic group, who migrated and settled here hundreds of years ago. They have firmly preserved their culture and language, including their distinctive lullabies, which I had the chance to experience closely during my visit.

Atmosphere and Lifestyle in Assam

Traveling to Assam is not easy for general tourists because this province is not a major tourist destination like Mumbai or Bengaluru, which I have shared about before. But it has its own unique charm that made me feel like I was truly discovering something hidden.

Stepping off the vehicle from a nearby town, I felt the peace and simplicity of the local community. Wooden houses and natural materials lined up among fields and small hills. The scent of Assam tea plantations around added freshness and a truly unique atmosphere.

Tai Phake Lullabies: A Cultural Bridge of Thai Heritage in India

In the evening, I had the opportunity to listen to lullabies sung by an elderly grandmother in the Tai Phake community. The song was not only beautiful musically but full of warmth and life stories, told through traditional melodies passed down for generations.

The lullabies here have a slow, gentle rhythm, using a language similar to Northern Thai mixed with local Indian Assamese vocabulary. Assam serves as a cultural bridge between two ethnicities. Despite being thousands of kilometers from Thailand, the lullabies clearly reflect the roots of Thai people abroad.

I, mr.hotsia, felt as if I traveled back in time to the rural hometown in Thailand through these songs. It is not just ordinary lullabies but a spiritual heritage that the community continues to preserve.

Food and Local Markets in Assam

Besides the music, Assam also has fascinating stories of food and lifestyle. I tried sticky rice with dried fish in a local recipe that was flavorful and moderately spicy, different from the central or southern Indian food I tasted in Bengaluru.Read more about Bengaluru

The village fresh market was a fun spot where I spent time strolling, smelling fresh spices, seasonal fruits and vegetables, and meeting friendly locals exchanging daily life stories. Though small, the lively atmosphere made me feel warm and want to stay longer.

Travel and Tips for Tourists

Although Assam is not yet widely popular among international tourists, for those who love local culture and want to experience authentic lifestyles, I, mr.hotsia, recommend opening your heart and planning a trip here.

Travel can be done by flying to nearby airports like Dibrugarh, then continuing by car or public transport to villages where the Tai Phake people live.Read trip and hotel tips in DibrugarhPrepare yourself for a journey that may not be very comfortable but is full of memorable experiences.
