Songs of Thai People in India Assam (Assam): Songs of Life and Cross-Border Culture

Hello, I am mr.hotsia. Today, I will take you deep into the beauty of the culture and songs of the Tai Pa Kae or Tai Pha Kae Thai group living in Assam state, northeastern India. This land may be unfamiliar to many, but it is full of fascinating life stories and the remarkable cultural connections between Thai and Indian cultures.

Assam, a state located in the northeastern region of India, is rich in ethnic and cultural diversity. There is a small Tai community calling themselves “Tai Pa Kae” or “Tai Pha Kae,” originating from Tai people in northern Thailand and Laos who migrated here centuries ago. Interestingly, this Tai group has preserved their language, traditions, and songs that reflect their Thai cultural roots firmly, even while living far away in Assam.

I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to visit Assam on my recent trip and experienced the atmosphere of folk singing by the Tai Pa Kae people. It is more than just singing; it is storytelling about life, farming, food, and beliefs in the community through emotionally rich and meaningful songs. These songs are not created in recording studios or big stages but are sung during festivals, merit-making ceremonies, and important community moments.

Songs Reflecting Life and Bonds

One of the most impressive experiences I had was listening to songs in the Tai Pa Kae local language blended with the flavor of northeastern Indian music featuring traditional instruments like the Saruong and Phin, which connect the cultures. The profound lyrics speak of nature, mountains, rivers, and rice as staple food, showing that this community still holds tightly to agricultural ways and simple living.

I had the chance to meet a group of folk singers in a small village in Assam. They told me these songs have been passed down from generation to generation and are a way for the Tai Pa Kae to maintain their identity amid India's ethnic diversity. Under the beautiful music and unique rhythms, I truly felt their love and pride in their roots.

Journey into the World of the Tai in Assam with mr.hotsia

Traveling to the Tai Pa Kae community in Assam is not easy because most areas are rural and require local contacts to access. I, mr.hotsia, traveled from nearby major cities like Dibrugarh, an important city in Assam with an airport connecting to other Indian cities. This made it convenient for me to reach villages that still strongly preserve their Thai cultural identity.

During my time here, I experienced local markets full of colorful agricultural products and local foods rich in spices and bold flavors comparable to typical Indian cuisine, just like I experienced inIndian Breakfast in Dibrugarhwhich perfectly blends local tastes with northern Indian flavors.

Culture and Songs Connecting Thai-India

Besides the songs of the Tai Pa Kae, I also talked with locals about the cultural fusion happening in this area. Interestingly, although in India, these Thai communities have firmly preserved their language and traditions, just as I have encountered inNam Chi Travelor journeys to Darjeeling where diverse cultures blend harmoniously.

The songs I heard in Assam act as a bridge connecting past and present, reflecting the endurance and love for the roots of the Tai Pa Kae people. No matter how much time passes, these songs continue to be passed on and sung in the hearts of the people.
