Making Chennai Fish, the city of flavors and life by the Bay of Bengal
When talking about India, many people might think of cities like Mumbai or Bangalore, but for me, mr.hotsia, “Chennai” is a city with a unique charm in terms of culture, lifestyle, and especially the coastal seafood by the Bay of Bengal, which is considered outstanding and unmatched.
Chennai, formerly known as Madras, is located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. It is the capital of Tamil Nadu state. This city is not only economically developed with industries like automotive and information technology but also perfectly preserves its cultural roots and natural beauty.
On this trip, I, mr.hotsia, intentionally came to “make Chennai fish,” one of the city’s famous seafood dishes. At the Chennai seaside market, I experienced the simple yet truly charming life of the fishermen. The locals start their day before dawn by heading out to catch fresh Chennai fish known for its unique sweet and rich flavor.
The method of making Chennai fish that I learned from the locals starts with selecting the freshest fish, usually from the Bay of Bengal, such as species similar to the Hilsa fish of Bangladesh (for detailed information about Hilsa fish, I recommend watchingDeep Dive Bangladesh EP 52which I previously made at mr.hotsia). Then the fish is cleaned and seasoned with local spices including turmeric, chili powder, and fresh herbs like holy basil and coriander.
What impressed me was the preparation method that emphasizes freshness and intense flavor without relying on ready-made seasonings. I tasted the freshly made Chennai fish, and the sweet, rich flavor of the fish combined with the aroma of spices made me almost forget the seafood flavors I had tried in other cities.
Atmosphere of Chennai Seaside Market and Fishermen’s Lifestyle
After finishing making Chennai fish, I, mr.hotsia, strolled through the lively Chennai seaside market full of colors and life. There were people buying and selling fresh fish and seafood, small restaurants serving local dishes like chicken biryani, and spicy Indian snacks.
This market is not only a trading hub but also a center of the fishing community that preserves traditional ways of life. I saw locals helping each other to scale fish, clean fish, and prepare seafood diligently. Some shops make their own special chicken biryani recipe unique to Chennai, different from those in Bangalore or Mumbai (for more about Bangalore, mr.hotsia has written inBackpacking Bangalore (Bengaluru))
In the morning, I also tried boiled eggs at a small hotel in Chennai. The eggs here taste different because of a boiling method that makes the eggs dense and sweet. This was one of the breakfast experiences I will never forget (read more atEating Boiled Eggs for Breakfast at a Hotel in Chennai (Chennai) India)
Chennai, a city that perfectly blends old and new
Besides seafood, Chennai is a city with a long history, from the British era when Madras was a naval base to becoming an important economic and cultural center of South India. I, mr.hotsia, walked around to admire the beautiful old architecture, including old churches and colorful local markets.
During my visit, the city was peaceful and the people were friendly. Although it is a large city with a population of 7.5 million, I felt warmth and simplicity in the daily lives of Chennai’s residents.
For anyone interested in fully experiencing the lifestyle and seafood flavors of Chennai, I recommend coming early in the morning to the seaside market to truly see the fishermen’s way of life. Don’t forget to try making Chennai fish in the local style—you will surely have an unforgettable experience.
