Cleaning fish before cooking in Chennai, India by mr.hotsia

When it comes to traveling in India, the name Chennai immediately comes to my mind because this city is not only the economic and technology center of Tamil Nadu state but also where I deeply experienced the lifestyle and fresh seafood caught from the Bay of Bengal. Learning how to clean fish before cooking here was an experience I want to share in detail, in true mr.hotsia style.

Previously, I traveled to experience the lifestyle of fishermen at the Chennai seaside market.Chennai seaside marketThis is the place where locals bring fresh fish from the sea to sell from early morning. The smell of the sea mixed with the scent of spices and herbs in the market awakened me and made me eager to learn the true process of preparing fish before cooking.

Starting with choosing the fish

Most fish in Chennai caught by locals come from the Bay of Bengal and are various types of saltwater fish, including the famous Hilsa fish in this region. Although this fish originates from Bangladesh and parts of eastern India, Chennai also offers a wide selection of fresh seafood. I have seen many types of fish from sea bass, tuna, to small sardines sold lively by locals.

After selecting fresh fish with firm flesh, I moved on to the most important step: cleaning the fish before cooking.

Fish cleaning process with Chennai fishermen

Here, locals wash the fish with seawater or even clean water prepared beforehand. Then they carefully slit open the fish’s belly with a sharp knife to remove the guts thoroughly. This step requires skill and care because if done poorly, the fish guts will cause a fishy smell and spoil the taste immediately.

mr.hotsia observed locals skillfully handling the fins and gills by hand, sometimes trimming fins and scales quickly with knives. Their skills were impressive. Washing the fish multiple times with clean water is emphasized to ensure freshness and cleanliness of the ingredients.

One thing that impressed me greatly was the use of some local herbs in the cleaning process, such as kaffir lime leaves or turmeric, to help eliminate fishy odors and add fragrance to the fish before frying or grilling.

Seafood cooking experience in Chennai

After learning how to clean fish from the locals, I also had the chance to try cooking local fish dishes at the Chennai seaside market. These dishes clearly reflect the culture and lifestyle of the people here. The flavors are a blend of Tamil spices and the freshness of the seafood.

As I have shared inBackpacking Chennai, IndiaChennai is not just a technology city or an automotive industry hub but is also full of cultural diversity and exciting food. Seeing the fish cleaning and seafood cooking process firsthand made me feel more connected to this city.

Cleaning fish and local lifestyle

Often when I stroll through the Chennai seaside market, I see people chatting happily while their hands move quickly cleaning fish. It is a daily life scene full of simplicity but with a unique charm, showing that attention to food and fresh ingredients is equally important in the lifestyle of the people here.

If anyone wants to truly experience the local atmosphere and learn the deep process of seafood preparation, I recommend visiting Chennai and walking through the seaside market yourself. I guarantee you will have a unique experience and gain new perspectives on the diverse and profound Indian cuisine.

Ending with a video clip

For those who want to see the real steps of cleaning fish before cooking in Chennai, I, mr.hotsia, have recorded a video clip inclean a fish before cooking (Chennai) Indiawhich will help you understand and clearly see how fresh fish is handled in this seaside city.
