Drinking Kashmir Coffee in North India, Jammu & Kashmir
When talking about North India, many might think of the land of the Himalayas, beautiful nature, or the blended culture of Hindus and Muslims. But for me, mr.hotsia, another thing that fascinates me about this area is "Kashmir Coffee," which has a unique taste and atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world.
On this trip to Kashmir, I spent time in the Jammu and Kashmir region, a land full of cultural diversity and breathtaking natural beauty. Along the way, I had the chance to stop by small coffee shops hidden in villages or small towns. Here, coffee is not just a drink but a symbol of daily gatherings, conversations, and relaxation.
Kashmir is a highland area with cool weather all year round. This coolness makes the rich and smooth coffee here special. I remember once sitting in a wooden coffee shop with windows open to the cold breeze, looking out at towering mountains and nearby small villages. I ordered hot black coffee along with local sweets made from nuts and honey. The warm feeling from that cup of coffee made me realize that "Kashmir is not just a tourist destination but a feeling."
Most coffee shops in Kashmir serve traditional coffee, carefully roasted and brewed to bring out full flavor. Some shops add spices like cinnamon or cardamom for a unique aroma. I tried several cups each day, sometimes milk coffee that was rich yet still carried the fragrance of coffee beans grown in the highlands of North India.
For coffee lovers, I recommend trying coffee at small shops in markets of small towns or villages in Jammu and Kashmir. Besides tasting authentic coffee, you also get the chance to chat with friendly locals full of interesting life stories.
The History of Coffee in Kashmir and Local Atmosphere
Kashmir has a long history of cultivation and coffee trade, although it is not as well-known as other coffee cities in India like Bengaluru, where I once experienced eating fried chicken and chicken biryani.Backpacking BengaluruBut Kashmir has its own charm with high terrain and cold weather suitable for growing special coffee varieties.
Coffee shops in Kashmir are usually small and simply decorated, using natural materials like wood and stone. I once sipped coffee in a shop with a distant view of the Himalayas. The peaceful atmosphere, with the sound of wind and birds, made that cup of coffee taste even better.
Besides coffee, I also tried local snacks at these coffee shops, such as Kashmir's special carrot cake with just the right sweetness or sweets made from milk and honey made by locals, which pair perfectly with strong coffee in the morning or afternoon.
Life and Lifestyle of People in Jammu and Kashmir
Drinking coffee in Kashmir is not just about the beverage but the start of exchanging stories and culture. I talked with locals sipping coffee in the same shop, listening to their life stories, farming, and caring for the mountainous land. Some shared hardships during winter but also happiness from being close to nature.
Kashmir also has interesting local markets I visited after coffee. These markets are full of local products like handwoven fabrics, spices, and traditional sweets. It is another side of tourism I recommend experiencing to see the real life of people here.
If anyone wants to enhance their North India travel experience fully, I recommend checking out my travel storiesJourney to Darjeelingthat I have written about. It is another travel destination not far from Kashmir, still preserving natural beauty and impressive local culture.
