Eating local food with the Tai Pa Ke people at Namphake Village, Assam, India

This time, mr.hotsia had the opportunity to travel far from the big city of Bangalore heading to the northeast region of India, Assam state, to discover the beauty of the culture and local food of the Tai Pa Ke people in Namphake Village, a Tai community that still firmly preserves its traditional way of life.

The journey to Namphake Village reminded me of a previous trip I tookto Namchiwhich is located in the nearby Sikkim area. The atmosphere here is peaceful and rich in nature, unlike Bangalore where mr.hotsia has beenbackpacking in Bangalorewhich is full of development and modernity. Namphake Village is like an oasis of Tai culture in Assam land.

Lifestyle and Culture of the Tai Pa Ke People

Namphake Village is situated in the middle of lush valleys and forests. Most villagers still live an agricultural lifestyle, growing rice, vegetables, and gathering seasonal forest products. The food here is made from fresh, new, and chemical-free ingredients. mr.hotsia saw that this area has a deep connection with nature and traditions passed down through generations, especially food which is the heart of the community.

The local food of the Tai Pa Ke people is similar to the food of Tai people in neighboring countries like Thailand and Laos, such as specially cooked sticky rice, fish caught from nearby streams and rivers, and local herbs used to enhance flavor.

Tasting Local Food with mr.hotsia

mr.hotsia was invited to taste local food in the home of a Tai Pa Ke family, a unique experience. It started with hot sticky rice steamed in the traditional way, served with salt-grilled fish that smelled of firewood and local herbs used by the community since ancient times.

The dish that made mr.hotsia fall in love was the herbal soup with a mild and refreshing taste. It contained many local herbs rare in big cities, such as wild kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, and galangal, all adding great aroma and nutritional value.

There was also a special dish called "Tai Nam Prik" (Tai chili paste) which is not very spicy but rich in spices made from dried chili and native seeds, combined with fresh vegetables from the backyard garden. mr.hotsia ate it with boiled vegetables and sticky rice, experiencing an incredibly balanced and harmonious flavor.

Local Market and Souvenir Shopping

During the exploration of Namphake Village, mr.hotsia had the chance to visit a small local market where villagers sold fresh and dried goods. This market is not only a trading place but also a community gathering spot where everyone meets to chat and exchange news.

Fresh vegetables, fruits, and local spices were displayed for selection. mr.hotsia tried fruits never seen before, such as wild star gooseberry and fruits with a sweet and sour taste. There were also local handicrafts like handwoven fabrics and natural material jewelry, perfect as souvenirs.

Experience the Authentic Local Atmosphere

mr.hotsia was impressed to see villagers living simply and deeply connected with nature. Eating food made from fresh ingredients in a homely atmosphere while listening to stories and traditions of the Tai Pa Ke people made me truly understand this culture.

For those interested in experiencing something similar to mr.hotsia, try planning a trip to the Assam region where Tai Pa Ke villages are located, and don't forget to visitthe journey to Darjeelingwhich is nearby to complete your northeast India trip.

Conclusion
