Eating Indian Fermented Fish Burger with the Tai Phake People at Namphake Village, Assam State
When talking about India, many people probably think of spicy food and strong spices, but deep in my heart, mr.hotsia believes India still has small, fascinating, and surprisingly impressive corners. Especially in Assam State, where I visited a small village called “Namphake,” home to the Tai Phake people, a Tai community with cultural and linguistic roots closely related to the Tai people in our Thailand.
Namphake Village is located amidst the peaceful and lush nature of Assam, a state in northeastern India. Here, there is not only the beauty of the landscape but also the charm of local food that perfectly blends Indian and Tai cultures, especially the “fermented fish burger” that I tasted and must say is a unique experience I have never encountered anywhere else.
Indian Fermented Fish Burger with the familiar taste of home but infused with Indian ideas
When it comes to fermented fish, many might think of its strong and distinctive smell, but in Namphake Village, the Tai Phake people have created a new dish by using fermented fish prepared as a burger. The fermented fish meat is seasoned with Indian spices, combined with fresh vegetables and freshly baked bread, turning it into a quick meal that is easy to eat and full of flavor in every bite.
I, mr.hotsia, sat down to eat the first bite of the fermented fish burger in the simple atmosphere of the Tai Phake people’s home. The fermented fish flavor was mellow and not overly pungent. The Indian spices were perfectly balanced, making this dish special enough to deserve a thumbs up. Meanwhile, the fresh crunchy vegetables and soft bread helped cut through the salty and intense taste of the fermented fish very well.
Tai Phake Community and a Lifestyle Blending Thai and Indian Cultures
The Tai Phake people here still preserve their traditional way of life, including rice farming, cultivation, and holding festivals that remarkably resemble those of Thai people in our country. They also speak a language closely related to Tai and Lao, a unique trait that made me feel like I traveled through time and across borders to meet relatives on the other side in India.
Namphake Village is located not far from important cities in Assam State, an area rich in cultural and linguistic diversity, as well as being historically significant and naturally beautiful.Traveling to NamchiOr the city of Sikkim, which has Buddha Park and a giant Buddha statue, is also in this area. It is a destination I have passed by and recommend stopping to see if you visit this region.
Travel and Eating Experience in Assam
Traveling to Namphake Village requires help from locals and advance planning since this area is not yet frequented by many foreign tourists. I, mr.hotsia, spent time learning about the lifestyle and talking with villagers to better understand their way of life and culture.
Besides the fermented fish burger, I also ate sticky rice, pickled vegetables, and chili paste made by the Tai Phake people. The flavors here are spicy but not too hot, perfect for someone like me who loves trying new things. For those who have been toBengaluruorMumbaiand felt that mainland Indian food is too spicy, try Assam where the flavors are different yet still somewhat familiar to our home cuisine.
Impressions from mr.hotsia
At Namphake Village this time, I had a deeper experience than typical tourism. I felt the Tai spirit in India, ate food that perfectly blends cultures, and learned that India’s diversity is not only in big cities but also deeply embedded in small community lifestyles in an incredible way.
If you love eating and trying new things, you should not miss coming here. The Tai Phake community and Indian fermented fish burger will make you feel like you have traveled across cultures from Thailand to the heart of India.
