Thai Language in Assam State: Tai Phake People, Tai Community of Namphake Village, Assam, India

When talking about India, many people often think of cultural and linguistic diversity, but for me, mr.hotsia, traveling to experience the original Thai community in Assam state was a profound and incredibly unique experience. Especially the Tai Phake people, also known as the Tai community of Namphake Village, a small community hidden in the rural area of this state. This is one of the places I highly recommend everyone try to experience true Thai culture abroad.

My journey to Namphake Village was not easy because there is not much tourist information available like in big Indian cities such as Bengaluru or Mumbai (which I have shared stories about before). But with determination and advice from locals, I had the chance to take a local vehicle through landscapes full of lush green forests and vast green fields, finally arriving at a community that still firmly preserves the original Tai culture and language.Backpacking BengaluruorBackpacking Mumbaias I have shared earlier. The Charm of the Tai Phake Language in Assam

The language of the Tai Phake people is not Hindi or Assamese as outsiders might think, but a language rooted in Tai-Kadai, closely related to the languages spoken in northern Thailand and Laos. This makes me feel like I am back home when talking with people in this village, even though it is more than 3,000 kilometers from Bangkok.

This language is still used daily, in conversations, telling local historical stories, and even in various ceremonies. Interestingly, the Tai Phake people still use ancient Tai script to record songs and community history, which I had the opportunity to see and experience closely, making me deeply appreciate their genuine effort to preserve their cultural roots.

Daily Life and Way of Life in Namphake Tai Village

Life in Namphake Village reflects simplicity but resilience. Most villagers still practice traditional agriculture, growing rice, vegetables, and raising animals in a community lifestyle similar to many villages in northern Thailand. However, here there is a unique blend of Thai culture harmoniously combined with Assamese ways of life.

I had the chance to share a meal with a Tai Phake family. The menu was full of authentic Thai flavors such as sticky rice dipped in fermented fish chili paste and wild mushroom curry cooked with local herbs. The taste was like what I had eaten back home but with a unique character reflecting the richness of local ingredients. There were also traditional sweets and fresh seasonal fruits.

Markets and Travel in Assam State

On the way to Namphake Village, I stopped at a local market in an Assam town not far from here. This market is a center for cultural and product exchange, offering fresh vegetables, fruits, spices, and diverse local handicrafts. I saw many ethnic groups shopping, including indigenous people, Assamese, and the Tai Phake ethnic group. Here, I contacted locals for advice and learned about the diverse lifestyles of this state.

For traveling in Assam state, it is recommended to use local or shared vehicles because some rural roads are still underdeveloped. Having a local companion will help you stay safe and gain a more authentic experience. I once traveled by local jeep, which not only allowed me to enjoy beautiful mountain and stream views but also exchange cultural stories not found in big cities.
