The written language of the Thai Tai Phake people in the Tai community of Namphake village, Assam, India

When talking about India, many might think of big cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, or Chennai. But for me, mr.hotsia, this journey took me to a small hidden corner in Assam state. There, the Tai Phake community, or Thai Tai Phake people, remarkably preserve their own written language in Namphake village. This community became one of my most impressive stops because it’s not just about language, but about a way of life, livelihood, and the strong bond between people and culture that remains resilient even far from their homeland in Thailand.

Namphake village is located in Assam, a northeastern state of India. Here, I walked amidst lush nature and witnessed the Tai Phake people's way of life, who still use their written language in daily activities, religious ceremonies, and festivals. Their written language is not just symbols on paper but a medium connecting the past, present, and future of this community.

Trip to Namphake village with mr.hotsia's impressions

From my personal experience, I arrived at Namphake village by car through winding rural roads surrounded by fields and mountains. Arriving here felt like stepping into another world that has fully preserved its traditions. The people welcomed me with smiles and friendliness. Although English is not the main language, communication was smooth through gestures and smiles.

In the village, I saw elders writing Tai Phake script on white paper with black ink pens. They told me this written language has been passed down through many generations, like a community treasure that must not be lost over time. There were also children learning Tai Phake alongside local Indian languages like Assamese and Hindi.

Lifestyle and culture still alive in the village

Besides the distinctive language, the Tai Phake culture remains colorful and unique. I had the chance to join a feast organized by the villagers, featuring local dishes similar to Thai food but adapted perfectly with local ingredients, such as sticky rice cooked with spices and local vegetables, and river fish dishes resembling those I’ve eaten in Northeastern Thailand.

Walking through the small community market in the village showed me that people still hold on to traditional ways. There was an exchange of handmade goods and products. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, like stepping back in time to a rural Thai community.

Connecting with other mr.hotsia trips in India

After gathering experiences in Namphake village, I also explored India’s diversity by traveling to other cities like Bengaluru, a technology hub.Backpacking BengaluruOr even the beautiful Namchi city with stunning Buddhist sites in Sikkim state.Traveling NamchiThis shows that India has deep diversity in culture, language, and beliefs.

But Namphake village is a special place I’ve never encountered elsewhere. It’s like experiencing a Thai community far away yet still connected to Thai identity through language and lifestyle. This is what I believe is the true wonder of traveling.
