Thai Village in Assam, India: Tai Pa Ke People at Namphake Village

When talking about India, many think of big cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, or Chennai, but for me, mr.hotsia, discovering a small hidden village in Assam state in Northeast India was a profound and incredibly impressive experience. Namphake Village is a community of the Tai Pa Ke people, an ethnic Thai group who have settled in this land for many generations.

Traveling to Namphake Village is not easy. I chose to travel via Numchi town, which I have previously written about in an articleTraveling Numchibefore. The journey from Numchi to this village requires a drive through winding roads in forested mountains and thick fog. The environment changes from the big city feel, giving a sense of stepping back in time.

Lifestyle and Culture of the Tai Pa Ke

What impressed me the most was experiencing the simple lifestyle of the Tai Pa Ke people, who have firmly preserved their ancient Thai customs, traditions, and language. They live an agricultural life, growing rice, vegetables, and raising livestock around the village. Most houses are built of wood with traditional thatched roofs, looking warm and harmonious with nature.

Besides witnessing their way of life, I was fortunate to taste traditional Thai food prepared by the Tai Pa Ke, such as sticky rice, som tam (papaya salad), and gaeng tai pla (fermented fish curry), which were flavorful and authentic just like back home. Additionally, I saw the handwoven textiles made by the Tai people here, featuring beautiful patterns full of symbolic meaning. Weaving is not only a source of income but also a precious cultural heritage.

Atmosphere and Attractions in Namphake Village

Namphake Village is located amidst lush nature with a small river flowing through, an important water source for agriculture and daily life of the community. I strolled through narrow alleys and found a local market offering fresh produce like vegetables, fruits, and spices. The villagers spoke warmly, and I received great advice from elders on visiting the village temple and sacred sites.

Of particular interest is Wat Phra Thamcharoen, the religious and cultural center of the Tai Pa Ke. The temple architecture blends Thai style with Assam local elements. Inside, there are Buddha statues and murals that clearly tell the story of the Tai Pa Ke people. Being in this peaceful atmosphere felt like a mental retreat from the city's hustle and bustle.

Connecting with Travel Experiences in Northeast India

For travelers interested in exploring the culture and lifestyle of Northeast India, visiting the Tai Pa Ke village at Namphake is a great opportunity. I, mr.hotsia, recommend combining this trip with visits to nearby attractions such as Darjeeling, which I have written about inTravel to Darjeelingand Numchi, which features the beautiful Buddha Park, perfect for those who enjoy nature and diverse cultures.

The Tai Pa Ke village in Assam is not only a cultural exchange point for Thai culture abroad but also a profound example of India's ethnic diversity. Walking, tasting, and talking with the locals made me feel this journey was more meaningful than just sightseeing.

Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia

Namphake Village of the Tai Pa Ke in Assam is one of the small hidden gems in India where I, mr.hotsia, experienced Thai identity in a distant land. The peaceful atmosphere, simple lifestyle, and warmth of the community deeply impressed me and I highly recommend everyone to visit at least once.

If you are looking for a unique travel experience in India and want to explore Thai cultural perspectives abroad, the Tai Pa Ke village at Namphake is an interesting and truly worthwhile destination.
