Local Cuisine of the Thai Village in Assam (Namphake), India: A Unique Charm of Flavors and Culture
When talking about India, many often think of cultural diversity and spicy food, but for me, mr.hotsia, tasting the local dishes of the Thai village in Assam, also known asNamphakeis a truly different and impressive experience.
Namphake is located in Assam state in Northeast India. It is a village where the Tai Phake people firmly preserve their traditional lifestyle and culture. Although far from their homeland in Thailand, the flavors and rituals remain warm and distinctly Thai.
Journey to Namphake Village
Traveling to Namphake village is not easy, requiring multiple transfers and some local connections. I chose to travel via Namchi city, which I have written about in the articleTraveling Namchibefore. Namchi is a good starting point to experience the Buddhist lifestyle in Northeast India before continuing by vehicle to Namphake for about 2-3 hours.
Along the route through mountains and lush green meadows, I saw traditional agriculture of the locals closely connected to nature. I saw Thai families working in terraced fields on hillsides. The fresh and peaceful atmosphere is something I cannot find in big cities like Bengaluru or Mumbai.
Lifestyle and Culture of the Thai People in Namphake
Upon arriving in Namphake, I felt like stepping back into the past of Thai people in our homeland. Everything remains simple and full of social bonds. People here still speak Thai mixed with local languages and hold annual ceremonies that clearly express their faith and Thai identity.
Most Thai people here still live an agricultural lifestyle, growing rice, vegetables, and raising animals, similar to what I experienced in Northeastern Thailand. Sometimes I heard folk songs and dances passed down through generations, a scene that deeply reminded me of my hometown.
Namphake Local Cuisine: Flavors That Tell Stories
Speaking of the local food of the Thai people in Namphake, I, mr.hotsia, must say the flavors and cooking methods are very special and intriguing. Besides locally sourced ingredients, the cooking techniques remain traditional, passed down over a long time.
The highlight of the food here is the use of natural herbs and spices combined with sticky rice and self-raised meats such as river fish, wild chicken, wild boar, and rare local vegetables. I tried sticky rice cooked over a charcoal stove; it was fragrant and very tender.
My favorite dish was the “Free-range Chicken Curry with Local Herbs,” which had the aroma of kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, and fresh galangal. The spiciness was just right, served with boiled vegetables and chili paste made from fresh chilies and garlic. This combination is hard to find in big city restaurants.
There was also “River Fish Larb,” made from fish caught in the village’s clear streams, seasoned with fresh lime juice and various herbs, giving a sour, spicy, and refreshing taste. It made me feel like tasting authentic Thai food but in a unique style specific to the Thai people in Assam.
Local Market and Fresh Food Tasting
Besides homemade food, I, mr.hotsia, also visited a small village market, which is a center for exchanging local goods. Here you can find fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs, and homemade dried foods like rice crackers, sticky rice flour, and various chili pastes.
The market atmosphere was very friendly. I talked with smiling vendors and villagers who shared how they carefully grow vegetables and catch fish in the streams. Walking through this market helped me understand that life here is truly connected to nature and simplicity.
Connecting with Travel Experiences in Northern India
For those interested in traveling in Northeast India, I recommend readingJourney to Darjeelingwhich is another nearby destination with beautiful mountain scenery and interesting local lifestyles. Or if you prefer the diversity of big cities, India also has cities likeBengaluruwhere I experienced urban life and authentic Indian food that is completely different.
Summary of Impressions from Namphake
Namphake is a small village hidden among mountains and nature, full of culture and history of the Thai people in India. The warmth of the people, the simplicity of life, and the unique local flavors impressed me, mr.hotsia, and I want to share this experience with all travelers who love discovering authenticity in undiscovered places.
