Breakfast at a hotel in Assam with the Tai Phake people, Tai community of Namphake village, Assam, India
My journey with mr.hotsia this time takes me far to the state of Assam in Northeast India, where I had the chance to experience the simplicity and warmth of the Tai Phake community in Namphake village, a small community nestled amidst lush nature and green mountains. The atmosphere still retains its traditional charm and the captivating rural way of life.
One morning at a small hotel in this village, the aroma of Tai Phake style breakfast filled the dining room. I, mr.hotsia, did not hesitate to taste the local food here, which is different from the typical Indian breakfasts I had in cities like Bengaluru or Mumbai before (if interested, check out my travel logs atBengaluruandMumbai)
Breakfast here focuses mainly on local ingredients, starting with sticky rice grown locally, fresh native vegetables, and mild spices that make the flavors accessible and balanced. I tried hot sticky rice with cabbage curry and river fish cooked with a little chili and turmeric. The taste was not as spicy as typical Indian food but had a gentle flavor and a clear aroma of local herbs.
There was also homemade bread made from rice flour, soft and smooth, served with grilled fish chili paste prepared by the Tai Phake people using their unique technique. I, mr.hotsia, must say this flavor is rare to find in other parts of India. Additionally, there were freshly boiled eggs served with fresh vegetables and seasonal fruits like ripe mango and banana, completing the perfect breakfast.
The atmosphere in the hotel dining room reflected the simplicity and friendliness of the Tai Phake people. I, mr.hotsia, saw young women in brightly colored traditional outfits carefully preparing food, while elders chatted and exchanged stories about the village. It felt like stepping back in time to a warm and genuine rural life.
After recharging with breakfast, I had the opportunity to talk with the hotel owner and villagers about the lifestyle and culture of the Tai Phake people, an ethnic group with roots from ancient Laos and Thailand. I was surprised to learn that they still strongly preserve their native language, traditions, and crafts passed down through many generations.
Life in Namphake village is surrounded by mountains and rich forests. The scenery I, mr.hotsia, saw in the morning made me feel refreshed and deeply relaxed. The peace and naturalness here are completely different from big cities like Chennai or Bengaluru (you can read about the atmosphere and stories of Chennai city atBackpacking Chennai, India)
For travelers who love exploring culture and want to taste authentic local community food, Assam and Namphake village are destinations not to be missed. Eating breakfast here is not just about flavor but an experience that tells the story and way of life of people who maintain their unique identity remarkably.
If you want to know India from a different perspective, away from flashy lights and chaos, tasting breakfast in Assam’s Tai Phake community will truly enrich your travel experience. I, mr.hotsia, invite everyone to open their hearts to learn and experience the beauty in this simplicity firsthand.
