Traffic in Bangkok, India, New Delhi (New Delhi) from the perspective of mr.hotsia
I, mr.hotsia, recently had the opportunity to travel to New Delhi, India. For someone familiar with Bangkok traffic like me, the exciting experience was to witness the chaos and dynamics of traffic in the capital of India. Here, it’s not just about cars or motorcycles but a world full of colors and the vibrant life of people on the streets.
New Delhi, the densely populated capital city, has traffic that almost never stops. The streets are filled with various types of vehicles, from three-wheeled motorcycles called “rickshaws” to private cars, buses, and large trucks. There are no clear lane markings like back home, so driving requires patience and careful observation all around.
Compared to Bangkok, I would say “New Delhi is a spicier version” because not only are there many vehicles, but the honking is almost constant. People also cross the streets without waiting for traffic lights. For those unaccustomed, this might be shocking, but for mr.hotsia, this is one of the charms of the city that lets you truly feel the real life of the locals.
Recommended Ways to Travel in New Delhi by mr.hotsia
To truly experience the local lifestyle in New Delhi, I recommend trying a rickshaw ride, which is quite symbolic of this city. Riding the small three-wheeler weaving through alleys in the old city gives a vivid picture of life and bustling local markets, street food, vendors, and friendly smiles welcoming tourists.
For longer trips or more convenience, New Delhi’s metro system (Delhi Metro) is an excellent choice. It covers a wide area, is affordable, clean, and safe, unlike the chaotic and hectic road traffic. Yet, within this chaos lies a charm that makes me want to travel here again.
Comparison with Other Indian Cities I Have Visited
If you have followed me, mr.hotsia, you know I have experienced atmospheres of several other Indian cities, such as Bengaluru, which is distinctly different from New Delhi. Bengaluru is a cleaner and greener city with large trees shading the streets and less chaotic traffic (read more atBackpacking Bengaluru)
Meanwhile, Mumbai, a large port city with a bustling economy, has its own unique traffic characteristics. The city is located on an island with relatively narrow roads but is still full of energy from its people and diverse culture (read more atBackpacking Mumbai)
Chennai, on India’s east coast, has traffic that appears more orderly with a gradually developing public transport system, depending on the city zone and travel time chosen (read more atBackpacking Chennai, India)
What to Prepare Before Traveling to New Delhi
If you are planning to visit New Delhi and face its challenging traffic, I, mr.hotsia, recommend preparing as follows:
- Be mentally ready for the chaos and continuous honking
- Choose accommodation near a metro station for convenient travel
- Research routes in advance and always have a map app ready on your device
- If taking a rickshaw, negotiate the fare before boarding to avoid being overcharged
- Be cautious about safety, especially when crossing streets at places without traffic signals
Street Life and Market Experiences in New Delhi
Another thing I really enjoyed in New Delhi was walking through street markets and small alleys full of fascinating sights. These markets are packed with authentic Indian food stalls, such as richly flavored chicken biryani with strong spices, as well as local sweets and drinks found only here.
If you like this market atmosphere, I recommend visiting markets in Bengaluru, which I have also explored, as they share similar vibrancy and diversity of food and goods (see review atBackpacking Bengaluru)
Summary of Impressions from New Delhi Traffic
For me, mr.hotsia, experiencing traffic in New Delhi is like learning about Indian life and culture on a deeper level. The chaotic and colorful streets reflect the social and economic diversity of this great country.
Despite some challenges and inconveniences, what I gained was a valuable experience that cannot be found elsewhere. I, mr.hotsia, invite everyone who loves in-depth travel and experiencing real local life to open their hearts to New Delhi. You will realize that the seemingly chaotic traffic is the charm that makes New Delhi unique.
