Eating lobster in Chennai, India: A seafood tasting experience not to be missed

When talking about Chennai, many might think of the bustling big city by the Bay of Bengal with its long history and diverse culture. But for me, mr.hotsia, Chennai is not only about its antiquity or city buzz. One thing I was impressed by and want to share is tasting fresh lobster from the Arabian Sea here.

That day I arrived in Chennai after exploring the city and experiencing the lifestyle of South Indians. I chose to stay in an area not far from the coast to try fresh seafood for cooking. The lobster here is fresh, sweet, firm in texture, and larger than any I have encountered elsewhere in India or even Southeast Asia.

Chennai Seaside MarketWhere I visitedThis is a spot tourists should not miss because you get to see how lobsters and other seafood are sold by local fishermen. The scent of the sea blends perfectly with Indian spices. I talked with vendors about how lobsters are caught in the sea and learned that Chennai lobsters are usually caught during calm sea seasons, resulting in fresh, sweet meat without any fishy smell.

After selecting a large lobster, I went to a seaside restaurant owned by an old fisherman turned seafood restaurant owner. The lobster here is cooked using authentic Tamil Nadu spices such as mustard, cinnamon, and fresh chili, giving a bold flavor without overpowering the lobster's natural sweetness.

Waiting for the meal in a seaside atmosphere with cool breezes and the sound of waves hitting the shore made this lobster dining experience even more special. The dish was served on a large plate with hot steamed rice mixed with local spices. I carefully picked each piece of lobster with my hands. The sweet and rich taste of the lobster meat combined with intense spices that never felt greasy made me understand why Chennai locals are proud of their seafood.

Travel tips and experiences from mr.hotsia

Traveling to Chennai is convenient with an international airport connecting to major cities worldwide, as well as a main railway station linking to other Indian cities. For me, this visit to Chennai was part of a South India trip to deeply experience the unique character of each city beyond just tourist spots.

After I had tried South Indian food in BengaluruAs I mentioned beforeI found that each city has distinctive flavors and ingredients. Chennai is no less impressive, especially with fresh seafood easily available from the nearby Arabian Sea.

Additionally, I witnessed the lifestyle of fishermen and coastal villagers who still firmly preserve their traditional ways. I strolled through the lively seafood market, seeing fast and vibrant trading — a scene rarely found in typical big cities.
