Eating Food of the Thai Tribe in India: Experience Deep Flavors and Culture with mr.hotsia
My journey in India this time was not just about visiting famous tourist spots or IT hubs like many know in Bengaluru, but I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to experience the fascinating community of the “Thai people in India,” locally called “Tai Pa Ke” and “Tai Pha Ke,” a tribe with cultural and linguistic roots remarkably connected to Thai people in our homeland.
From traveling to several provinces in India, including Bengaluru, the technology center, and other places like Mumbai and Chennai, I found that the food of the Thai tribe in India is distinctive and clearly reflects their way of life. Whether it’s chicken biryani influenced by North Indian cuisine or small dishes using local ingredients found in those regions.
Unforgettable Flavors: Food of the Thai Tribe in India
When thinking of Indian food, many might imagine strong spices and exotic flavors. But for the food of the Thai tribe in India, I found it to be mild and harmoniously blended, especially the chicken biryani I tasted in Bengaluru, which has a unique character with spices that are not too strong, combined with tender chicken and carefully prepared jasmine rice, creating a balanced and delightful taste in every bite.
Additionally, I tried a small dish called “Momo,” Tibetan-style dumplings popular among the Thai tribe in India around the Namchi area, not far from Sikkim. The Momo here differs from others I’ve had in other cities by using fresh ingredients and focusing on a soft, smooth texture. I sampled them at a small shop on Tendong Hill near the Samdruptse Statue, or Buddha Park, a Buddhist site in Sikkim.Traveling NamchiThe atmosphere there is beautiful on clear days. I recommend hiking up to try Momo while enjoying the surrounding mountain views.
Travel and Lifestyle of the Thai People in India
Most Thai people in India live in mountainous and highland areas in Northeast India, such as Assam and Sikkim, which have beautiful nature and cool weather year-round. I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to talk with locals who shared that their food mainly focuses on natural ingredients like sticky rice, local vegetables, and self-raised meat, giving their cuisine a unique flavor different from typical Indian food.
Besides food, the culture and traditions of the Thai tribe in India are well preserved, including the local language and traditional clothing reflecting their Thai roots. I was deeply impressed to see a simple lifestyle filled with warmth and strong community bonds.
Travel Recommendations for Those Who Want to Experience This
For travelers interested in tasting food and learning about the culture of the Thai tribe in India, I recommend starting from Bengaluru, a large, clean, and cosmopolitan city. But to truly experience the local way of life, you may need to travel to Assam or Sikkim regions, which might require contacting knowledgeable local guides as mountain and rural routes can be challenging.
Traveling from Bengaluru to the Thai community areas in India requires advance planning and preparation for a long journey. But trust me, once you arrive, you will have a rewarding experience and enjoy unique food that you won’t find anywhere else.Backpacking BengaluruA great starting point for food travelers looking to change the atmosphere.
