Traditional Thai Sweets of the Thai Tribe in India: Sweetness that Connects Cultures

I, mr.hotsia, recently had the opportunity to travel to India, beyond the familiar images ofBangaloreorMumbaithere was a more special and profound experience: meeting the Thai community in India, mostly the ethnic group “Tai Phake” or “Tai Pake,” who live in Assam state and nearby areas.

What impressed me was not just seeing the lifestyle of Thai people in a distant land, but the warmth of food culture that clearly preserves Thai identity, especially traditional Thai sweets that this group still happily makes and shares on Indian soil.

The Fragrance of Thai Sweets in a Distant Land

That day, I walked through a small alley in a village where Thai people in India live. The aroma of Thai sweets filled the air—steamed sweets, banana sweets, and layered sweets made with delicate handmade craftsmanship, blended with the scent of Indian spices around. It was a scene both novel and heartwarming at the same time.

The steamed sweets here use glutinous rice flour mixed with palm sugar, fresh coconut milk, and sometimes small split mung beans. The taste is sweet and creamy, just like back home. The banana sweets wrapped in banana leaves retain softness and the full aroma of ripe bananas, especially when these sweets are sold at markets or during Tai Phake tribal festivals. They act as a bridge connecting past and present.

Enduring Lifestyle and Culture

Talking with Thai people here, I learned that although living in India, a land rich in cultural and linguistic diversity, the Tai Phake still firmly preserve their identity. They continue to use the Thai language daily, hold traditional ceremonies similar to ours, and of course, these traditional Thai sweets remain an inseparable part of their culture.

Moreover, I saw that this community maintains close relationships with other communities in India, just as I have experienced the lifestyles of people inNam Chiwhich has peaceful Buddhist temples and religious sites, along with local foods that are different yet full of cultural diversity.

Unexpected Journeys and Encounters

This trip was not heavily planned; I only intended to explore life in India. But upon meeting the Tai Phake community, I realized that travel is not just about seeing places but deeply learning and experiencing the diverse ways of life of different people.

Traveling in India is not always easy, especially reaching the villages of these Thai people, which requires local contacts and help from locals. I used English and some local languages to communicate and learn, building good relationships. This is the charm I love about backpacking without rushing.

Thai Sweets in India: A Sweet Cultural Bridge

Thai sweets are not just desserts for the Tai Phake; they symbolize bonds and the preservation of important cultural heritage. I believe the sweetness infused in these sweets is the sweetness of memories and Thai identity that never fades no matter where we are.

For those interested in stories of Thai people abroad and wanting to see new perspectives of India, I recommend following my diverse travels in India, includingChennaithe capital of Tamil Nadu filled with diverse cultures, orDarjeelingthe mountain town I mentioned in a previous article.

Finally, mr.hotsia’s travels are not just about tourism but also about learning diverse lifestyles and cultures around the world. Today’s traditional Thai sweets in India are another clear proof that Thai identity is grand and warm wherever we go.
