Explore the flavors of street food in Kolkata, India with mr.hotsia

From my travel experience in India, one of the most unforgettable impressions was tasting street food in Kolkata, a bustling city full of diverse cultures. I see eating street food here not just as refueling but as experiencing the real life of locals at every step.

Kolkata, also known by many as Calcutta, is a major city in eastern India. The street food here has a unique character, blending the rich and diverse culinary culture of the Bengalis. From local dishes to common street snacks, every time I pass a food stall, I am captivated by the fragrant spices that delight the senses.

Street Atmosphere and Must-Visit Food Stops

Evenings in Kolkata are the liveliest time for street life. Food stalls line the sidewalks and street corners. The aroma of spices and freshly cooked food invites you to explore. I recommend tryingpuchkaor what Bangkok locals know as “fried meatball in water.” Here it is served as crispy round dough filled with peas and potatoes, seasoned with a tangy and spicy broth. It’s a popular local favorite. If you want something more filling, kathi rollor chicken/beef rolls wrapped in roti with hot spices, is another option I recommend trying.

There are also dishes reflecting the diversity of East Indians, such asilish macher paturiHilsa fish, a beloved fish among Bengalis and famous in the Bay of Bengal region. I have seen street vendors wrap this fish in banana leaves and grill it over hot coals. The fragrant aroma of the fish mixed with spices creates an unforgettable taste. Linking travels in Bengaluru and Chennai

During my travels in India, I had the chance to taste street food in other cities like Bengaluru and Chennai, each with its own street food charm. Bengaluru is famous for spicy chicken biryani and Indian fried chicken (for those interested, read the story and watch the video inBackpacking Bengaluru). Chennai also offers interesting local Tamil snacks and sweets (more details atBackpacking Chennai, India)

). But Kolkata is the city where I felt the street food culture was raw and intense. The scent of spices fills the air, mixed with the lively chatter of vendors and the bustling crowd, making me feel deeply immersed in the real life of East Indians.

Safety and Tips for Travelers

Although eating street food in Kolkata is an exciting experience, mr.hotsia recommends being cautious about cleanliness and hygiene. Choose stalls that look clean and are popular with locals for safety. Don’t forget to carry bottled water as the weather here is quite hot and humid.

For those interested in more travel in India, such as taking the Darjeeling route from Kolkata, mr.hotsia has written about it in the articleJourney to Darjeelingwhich helps with planning, including stories about Indian breakfasts in Darjeeling inBackpacking Northern Indiawhich is also very interesting.
