Thai Tribes in India: A Journey to Discover Roots in a Different Land

When talking about India, many people think of its cultural, religious diversity, and spicy cuisine. But I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to experience another dimension that few know about — meeting the Thai tribes living in India, especially in the northeastern region, an area rich in indigenous tribes with cultural roots deeply connected to the Thai people in our homeland.

This journey was not focused on any specific province or city because the Thai tribes in India are spread across many areas. However, most are found in Assam state and neighboring states, regions with high ethnic and cultural diversity. I got to know the Tai Phake people, an ancient Thai group who migrated and settled in India centuries ago.

Atmosphere and Lifestyle of the Thai Tribes in India

What I immediately felt upon entering these communities was the warmth of the people who still preserve cultures, traditions, and languages surprisingly similar to those of Thai people at home. Their distinctive clothing, combined with the natural environment and steep mountains, allowed me to experience a peaceful and simple life, very different from the hustle and bustle of big Indian cities like Bengaluru or Mumbai.

Here, local markets are full of colorful fruits, fresh vegetables, and native foods fragrant with Thai-style spices. I enjoyed wandering and tasting street food stalls, sometimes savoring Indian-style chicken biryani that closely resembles our own, and also tried momo, a Nepalese-Indian style dumpling that is delicious and rivaled any found in the Nam Chi region.Nam Chi TravelPlaces I Have Visited

Travel and Contact with Thai People in India

Accessing the Thai tribal communities in India requires local connections and patience. I, mr.hotsia, chose to travel by jeep and shared taxis easily found in nearby towns. Sometimes, I had to travel long distances on winding mountain roads. This kind of journey allowed me to see the real life of villagers, rice farming, animal husbandry, and a simple but stable community lifestyle.

I also spoke with elders who shared stories of migration from Thai lands to India, preserving language and traditions that, despite the passage of time, still permeate daily life. This perspective is something I could not find just by visiting famous places like Bengaluru.City of Technologyor MumbaiArabian Sea Port CityPlaces I Have Traveled To

Flavors and Blended Cultures

Food was another highlight of this trip. The blend of Thai and Indian flavors happened harmoniously, such as biryani using Indian spices but retaining the fragrant taste similar to our jasmine rice. Although momo is not an authentic Thai dish, it stood out with its softness and balanced flavor. Additionally, I tried rice wine (Lao Khao Fang) used by the Tai people in various ceremonies, which gave a warm feeling and a deep cultural connection.

Recommendations for Travelers Who Want to Experience Thai Tribes in India

If you want to open a new experience, not just visiting famous places in India like Chennaior Darjeelingwhich I have documented, but want to explore cultural stories truly connected to Thai people, visiting the Thai tribal communities in India is an exciting and worthwhile answer.

Don't forget to prepare your mind to embrace differences and try to talk with locals as much as possible, because the stories and friendships you gain will be deeper and more valuable than ordinary travel.
