Eating Food in India: Beware of Super Bugs: A Firsthand Experience from mr.hotsia

When talking about India, many people think of its diverse culture, ancient cities, uniquely spicy food, and colorful travels. But for me, mr.hotsia, who has had the chance to travel to many cities across India, one thing to warn travelers about is the “Super Bugs” hidden in local food that we might not be aware of.

Eating food in India is one of the country’s charms because each city and state has its own food style, such as the original chicken biryani recipe in Bengaluru that I had the chance to try atBackpacking Bengaluruor street food in Mumbai, which is diverse and full of strong spices inBackpacking MumbaiBut what I encountered and want to share is the risk from Super Bugs found in these foods.

What are Super Bugs? Why should we be careful?

Super Bugs, or drug-resistant bacteria, are bacteria that have developed the ability to resist antibiotics, making infection treatment more difficult. This is a global public health problem, and India is one of the countries with a high prevalence of these bacteria due to many factors, including overuse of antibiotics in humans and animals, as well as environmental and hygiene conditions that still need improvement.

For travelers like me, mr.hotsia, eating fresh and spicy local food is a must, but in India, one must be cautious about the cleanliness of food and water used in cooking because Super Bugs often exist in unclean food or food prepared without proper hygiene, causing severe diarrhea or infections that are difficult to treat.

Real Experience with Food in India to Watch Out For

Once when I traveled to Bengaluru, I intended to try the local chicken biryani, which is my favorite dish in India. But that time, I suffered from severe diarrhea even though the restaurant looked clean and was recommended by locals. That’s when I learned about Super Bugs through my own experience. Since then, I have been more cautious when choosing food, especially freshly cooked or street food without adequate hygiene protection.

Compared to my experience in Chennai atBackpacking Chennai, Indiaor during my trip to Darjeeling atJourney to DarjeelingI choose to eat at places with standards or those truly popular among locals and avoid drinking water from unreliable sources. Additionally, I usually carry anti-diarrhea medicine and basic antibiotics for emergencies.

Tips for Eating Safely in India from mr.hotsia

  1. Choose to eat at clean restaurants recommended by locals:Restaurants popular with locals that maintain good hygiene are usually safer than street vendors without protection.
  2. Avoid tap water or uncertain water sources:Drink sealed bottled water and check the production date.
  3. Avoid undercooked or long-stored food:Food that is not fully cooked or kept for a long time may harbor bacteria.
  4. Wash hands frequently, especially before eating:Personal hygiene is very important.
  5. Carry medicine and take care of your health:Prepare anti-diarrhea medicine, antibiotics as prescribed by a doctor, and consult a physician immediately if symptoms occur.

Impressions and Lessons from Eating Indian Food by mr.hotsia

Although India has charm in its unique food and eating culture, hygiene and Super Bugs are issues that must be taken seriously. I, mr.hotsia, through firsthand experience, believe that careful food choices and adaptability are key to making travel in India enjoyable and safe.

On the next trip, if anyone wants to try India’s delicious food, besides Bengaluru, I recommend stopping by Mumbai with its diverse cuisine or Chennai with its varied and cleaner food culture. But the most important thing is to prepare and take care of your health because Super Bugs are not a small matter to overlook.
