and 30 kilometers wide, located in the northern province of Sumatra Island, Indonesia. This lake is the largest lake in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. In the middle of the lake is a volcanic island called "Samosir Island." Lake Toba has become an important tourist destination because it is home to orangutans that attract many tourists. Lake Toba is believed to have formed from an eruption around 73,000-75,000
years ago. The University of Michigan estimated that lava from the volcano spread across half the world from China to South Africa. The eruption lasted about one week and produced ash clouds reaching 10 km above sea level to the north. At that time, 60% of the population died. Samosir Island has villages opposite Parapat town. I saw two villages: Tuk-Tuk village, which is the main tourist spot popular with Indonesians and foreigners,
mostly without local houses, only resorts around. It is a tourist zone with pleasant weather, not hot, and cold at night. The other village is TAMOK village, which I haven't visited yet but seems to be a local residential area not focused on tourism. I find it more interesting than Tuk-Tuk village, nice for walking and has accommodations. To reach both villages, take a boat from Parapat for 10,000 rupiah or 30 baht per person, getting off at the desired accommodation. The trip takes
40 minutes. When I wrote this, I was staying at Samosir Island at Samosir Cottage, a place recommended by guidebooks. I paid 200,000 rupiah per night. The room has no air conditioning or fan, but the weather here is really good. The front faces the water, so anyone can swim.
