Located in the northern part of Sumatra island, covering an area of 79.97 square kilometers, 128 km from Medan and 52 km from Parapat, the town by Lake Toba. Most tourists cross over to visit Lake Toba, but I find this city very interesting (siantar). I think there are many Chinese people here. The local food is delicious. Many shopkeepers speak Mandarin. The coffee here is traditional, similar to ours. The city is clean, but accommodation is a bit expensive.
I stayed here for 800 baht per night on May 22-23, 2014. Another unique highlight of this city is the ancient houses that feature buffalo horns, unlike the northern houses in Thailand which use galah. Here, they use buffalo horns, which is quite unusual. I find the food and coffee here very tasty. The city layout is well planned, clean, safe, not crowded, with a fair number of tourists. This city is one of the charming places in Indonesia. I forgot to mention that people warn about keeping your wallet safe here.
