I chose to stay in Siantar for two nights before heading to Lake Toba. From Medan to Siantar City, I recommend taking the train to experience the Indonesian way of selling goods on the train, which you only see on Sumatra trains; on Java trains, only staff sell items. The Siantar train station is located in the city center, just a few hundred meters walk to the market, accommodations, and the city area with night food stalls. Along the way, you will see rice fields and the farming lifestyle of Indonesians.
