TukTuk Village in the middle of Lake Toba. They farm, fish, and sustain their livelihood thanks to tourists. I like the beautiful Batak houses here. The Batak are one of Indonesia's ethnic groups located in North Sumatra, Medan, Toba. Touring TukTuk Village takes about 1 hour. I walked there at 4:00 PM. Most waterfront areas of TukTuk Village have restaurants and accommodations mixed with local homes. Inland areas away from Lake Toba mainly farm rice. Many locals run Batak-style massage shops.
But mostly they survive because of tourism. This place is famous because tourists continue their journey to see orangutans on the island. Most waterfront areas of TukTuk Village have resorts and accommodations. Tourists enjoy swimming, fishing, and water activities like banana boating. There are about 50 waterfront accommodations. When traveling by boat, they ask which accommodation you want to get off at and will drop you there. It's best to choose your accommodation in advance to avoid being dropped off where the boatman prefers. When I stayed at
Samosir Cottages. Accommodation names here are quite similar, so remember carefully. The place I stayed at is the top recommendation in the Lonely Planet Guidebook. The room was good, affordable, no air conditioning, but comfortably cool. Behind the waterfront is a Batak village where people farm and fish, with about 100 houses. I walked to the accommodation area and found a local restaurant selling delicious goat curry. I ate two bowls. They eat steamed rice here just like at home.
I truly enjoyed my time in TukTuk Village.
