Ferry from Bali to Java: A travel option that I, mr.hotsia, must say is worth trying

For those planning to travel from Bali Island to Java Island, Indonesia, using the ferry service is one of the interesting and uniquely charming travel methods. I, mr.hotsia, have had the chance to try this route and would like to share my real experience in detail, not just a typical travel article.

Starting the journey at Denpasar, the capital city of Bali

First of all, traveling to Java from Bali requires departure from the eastern side of Bali. I chose to use the bus service from Ubung Terminal Station in Denpasar, which is a popular starting point for many travelers. There is actually a new terminal in Mengwi, but since it is less convenient to get there, most buses still pick up passengers at Ubung. The bus will pick up passengers at Mengwi on the way before heading to East Java.

The bus fare from Ubung to Banyuwangi is about 75,000 rupiah, approximately 220 baht, and takes around 5 hours. It is a worthwhile and convenient trip because upon arrival at the port, the bus will take us onto the ferry without extra charge. The ferry crossing takes about 40 minutes. I, mr.hotsia, think this is the most beautiful time because you can see clear sea water and the atmosphere of the surrounding islands. Although there is some trash in the sea, it does not diminish the beauty of the scenery.

Arriving at Java and continuing by bus to Banyuwangi city

After crossing the ferry to Java, the bus continues about 10 kilometers to enter Banyuwangi city. The bus station is about 4 kilometers from the city center. If you want to go to the city center or accommodation, you need to take a Bemo (minibus) which varies in price depending on the time. I once took it near dusk and paid 70,000 rupiah, which was slightly more expensive than usual. So if possible, it is better to take the Bemo during the daytime.

For many tourists, upon arriving in Java, they choose to get off at the bus station or nearby for convenience to connect to trains to other cities. But personally, I, mr.hotsia, prefer to travel deeper into the community to experience the local way of life, which shows the real life beyond just tourist spots.

Travel atmosphere and my feelings as mr.hotsia

Throughout the bus route from Bali to Java, I felt the difference between these two islands. Bali, which I have described in previous articles,Traveling from Denpasar Bali Airport to the cityis an island distinguished by Hindu culture and a lifestyle deeply connected to religion. Java, on the other hand, has more cultural diversity and is more urban. This is reflected in the bustling local markets and people coming in and out of the bus station.

As for the atmosphere on the ferry, I really liked it. The sea breeze was cool and refreshing. The long sea view made me feel relaxed despite the long journey. Although there was some trash in the water, it was clear and reflected the sunlight beautifully. It was a time I let my mind wander with the beauty of nature and the simplicity of traveling in Indonesia.

Connecting travel with local life and food

After disembarking and continuing the journey in Java, I, mr.hotsia, recommend exploring local markets or roadside eateries because the food in Java is diverse and flavorful, as I have mentioned in my articles.Bali CuisineAlthough on the same island, the taste of food and ingredients used in Java have their own unique character. Also, seeing fresh markets and local lifestyles is another important experience for travelers who want to feel something real, not just pretty images from social media.

Tips for travelers wanting to try this route

For those interested in traveling from Bali to Java by ferry, I, mr.hotsia, have a few small tips:

  • Plan your travel time well because the bus and ferry combined take nearly 6 hours.
  • If possible, bring snacks and drinking water as food may be hard to find at some points along the way.
  • Prepare for taking the Bemo from the bus station in Banyuwangi and try to ride during the daytime to avoid higher fares at night.
  • If you like photography, don’t miss the ferry crossing time because the sea and small islands views are very beautiful.
  • Don’t forget to explore local lifestyles and markets in Java to capture deeper memories beyond just passing tourism.

Summary of experiences and impressions from mr.hotsia

Traveling by ferry from Bali to Java is an experience I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend. It’s not just about convenient and cost-effective travel but also an opportunity to see the differences and diversity of lifestyles on two uniquely characteristic islands: Bali with its strong Hindu culture and charming nature, and Java as the gateway to big cities and a center of diverse cultures.

If you want to know Bali more deeply, try reading my articleTraveling Bali on Your Ownto understand Bali from a different perspective than the usual image. And if you like cities full of vibrant life and culture, I recommend continuing to other cities in Java or even Lake Toba, which I have shared my experience inLake Tobaas well.

Finally, I, mr.hotsia, would like to share a video I recorded during the trip to help everyone see the real atmosphere more clearly.
