Lake Toba, Sumatra, Indonesia: The wonder of a still active volcanic crater
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll invite you to venture off the beaten path from Bali, a place I often visit, heading north of Sumatra Island, Indonesia, to experience Lake Toba, one of the largest and oldest volcanic crater lakes in the world. This is not just an ordinary lake but the caldera of a massive volcanic eruption that occurred about 73,000-75,000 years ago, which changed the world so profoundly that the University of Michigan even provided information that lava dust and ash spread halfway around the globe!
Lake Toba stretches over 100 kilometers long and 30 kilometers wide, making it the largest lake in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. At the center of the lake is Samosir Island, a volcanic island considered the heart of tourism here. With its peaceful atmosphere and beautiful nature, I arrived here starting from Parapat town, the ferry point to Samosir Island. The boat ride takes only 40 minutes and costs about 10,000 rupiah per person, roughly 30 baht.
Tuktuk Village and TAMOK Village: Two contrasting worlds in the middle of Samosir Island
Upon arriving at Samosir Island, I chose to stay atTuktuk Villagewhich is the main tourist village here. Tuktuk is full of resorts, hotels, and restaurants. The weather here is very pleasant, not hot like in the city. The lakeside view is so beautiful that I wanted to swim every day. At night, the air is cool enough to need a thick blanket. Mr.Hotsia says this is an experience unlike any other lake in Asia I've encountered.
But if you ask me which place is more interesting, I recommend taking a stroll to TAMOK Village, not far from Tuktuk. TAMOK is a real local community, not focused on tourism. It has the charm of true countryside, with few tourists. There are various accommodation options. This is another side of Samosir Island that I prefer. It’s perfect for those who want to experience local life and leisurely walk along the genuine lakeside.
Orangutans and Nature on Samosir Island
Lake Toba is special also for its wildlife, especially the orangutans. There is a conservation area here that allows tourists to get close and study the behavior of these monkeys. I enjoyed watching these adorable orangutans amid the shady forest atmosphere, feeling like stepping into another world that remains perfectly natural.
Local Food and Lakeside Markets
Speaking of food at Lake Toba, I must say locals here favor a type of tilapia called "Mila," which resembles the tilapia we have at home. I saw this fish at the Parapat market, especially on Saturdays when locals bring fresh fish to sell in abundance. The prices are cheap and the fish are very fresh. Anyone who loves freshwater seafood should try it.
Besides tilapia, Medan city, not far from Lake Toba, has very interesting local dishes such as Sate Padang, which I tried and loved. The spicy sauce is rich and distinct from the black sauce satay of Bali. For those interested in food, I recommend readingmy article on Medan cuisinefor more details.
Traveling from Bali to Lake Toba
Many may wonder how to travel from Bali to Lake Toba. I recommend starting from Bali using low-cost airlines like AirAsia or Lion Air to fly into Medan Airport, the main city of Sumatra Island. From there, you can take a train or taxi to Parapat, the gateway to Lake Toba. The journey is convenient and not complicated as you might think. Relaxing Amid Nature at Samosir Cottage
For accommodation on Samosir Island, I chose to stay at Samosir Cottage, recommended by several guidebooks. The rooms have no air conditioning, but the cool weather here makes it suitable. The price is about 200,000 rupiah per night. It’s lakeside with beautiful lake views. For those who love peace and natural atmosphere, I think this place fits perfectly. Mr.Hotsia guarantees a satisfying trip.
Summary: Lake Toba, a destination to visit at least once in a lifetime
For me, Lake Toba is not just an ordinary tourist spot but one of the profound travel experiences in Indonesia. A place where nature tells the story of the ancient world amazingly. The local lifestyle, the lake’s tranquility, the beauty of Samosir Island, and the fascinating wildlife all make me want to return and recommend it to friends who enjoy deep travel experiences to experience it themselves.
