Tuktuk Village, Lake Toba: The land of Batak people's way of life on an island in the lake
I, mr.hotsia, recently had the chance to visit Tuktuk Village located on an island in the middle of Lake Toba, Bali Province, Indonesia. This is a Batak community, one of the unique ethnic groups of North Sumatra. Traveling to Tuktuk Village is not easy, but the reward of experiencing the traditional lifestyle and the atmosphere by Lake Toba made me feel, “This is true travel.”
Tuktuk Village is located on a small island in the middle of Lake Toba. The locals still live simply, mainly farming and fishing in Lake Toba. Nowadays, tourists play a vital role in sustaining the community. They have small local restaurants, renowned Batak-style massage shops, and dozens of accommodations scattered along the lakeshore, creating a perfect blend of natural tranquility and warm community spirit.
Walking Around Tuktuk Village: The Beauty of Wooden Houses and Local Life
I walked around Tuktuk Village in the late afternoon, around 4 PM. The sunlight softened, creating a warm and gentle atmosphere. Most Batak houses are made of wood with beautiful traditional carvings and distinctive roofs reflecting their cultural heritage. Some houses are lakeside, extending along wooden walkways built for locals and tourists to stroll comfortably.
Walking deeper into the village away from the lakeshore, I saw terraced rice fields where locals still use manual labor and livestock for cultivation, interspersed with Batak massage shops offering services. The locals speak both the local language and Indonesian fluently and welcome tourists with smiles and friendliness. I tried the unique Batak massage, focusing on acupressure and muscle squeezing, which helped relieve travel fatigue very well.
Accommodation and Activities by Lake Toba: A Small Paradise for Tourists
Tuktuk Village is popular among travelers seeking to escape the hustle of big cities. There are over 50 lakeside resorts and guesthouses ranging from budget to mid-range. I stayed at Samosir Cottages, recommended by Lonely Planet. The rooms have no air conditioning but are comfortably cooled by the lake breeze. Many accommodations have similar names, so remember the exact name when boarding the boat, as the boatmen will ask where you want to get off to deliver you correctly.
Popular activities here include swimming in the lake, fishing, and water sports like banana boat rides, which I tried with a group of international tourists. The fun atmosphere and mountain views surrounding the lake enriched this unique experience.
Local Food in Tuktuk Village: Flavors That Make Me Want to Return
For dinner, I wandered to a local restaurant away from the lakeshore. This place served rich Batak-style goat curry with steamed rice, similar to home-cooked meals. I ate two bowls without worrying about calories because the flavor and aroma of the curry truly satisfied me.
The food here is distinctly different from the Balinese cuisine I have tried inBali Citydue to the Batak heritage. Most dishes focus on goat meat, beef, and fish caught from Lake Toba, which are fresh and delicious. From what I tasted, this flavor is the true charm of authentic local food.
Travel Connections: From Bali to Tuktuk Village at Lake Toba
Many people may know Bali as an island famous for Hindu temples, arts and culture, and beaches such asTraveling from Denpasar Bali Airport to the Cityor tourist spots inUbud City, Baliwhich has beautiful culture and nature. But I recommend trying a new experience by traveling to North Sumatra to experience the Batak way of life at Tuktuk Village.
Lake Toba is the largest freshwater lake in the world, and Tuktuk Village is located on Samosir Island in the middle of the lake, a must-visit destination for nature and culture travelers.Lake Tobais also renowned for its natural beauty and numerous water activities.
Travel Tips and Personal Experience from mr.hotsia
If you plan to visit Tuktuk Village, I recommend preparing well because the journey involves several steps: flying into Medan city on Sumatra Island, then traveling by car or train to Parapat, the main port for crossing to Samosir Island.
I took a boat from Parapat to Tuktuk Village, and when boarding, I advised clearly stating the accommodation name because the boatmen will drop you off at the pier closest to your lodging for convenience and to avoid wasting time searching at night.
While walking in the village, I felt the peace and warmth of a community that has preserved its traditional way of life well, unlike the hustle of big cities I have experienced. Here, it felt like true relaxation for the soul.
