Accommodation Recommendations in Denpasar and Ubud, Bali by mr.hotsia

I, mr.hotsia, have just settled and stayed in Bali, Indonesia for 6 nights. Now I am sitting and writing this article at the hotel.Nakula Familiar InnRight in the heart of Denpasar city, Bali. I want to share my experience and recommend main accommodations in Bali for you to read in depth, as if you are traveling yourself—not just general floating information—to help those who have never been to Bali see a clear picture and choose accommodations they like, just like my own travels.

Accommodation in Denpasar Zone: The Authentic Balinese Lifestyle

Denpasar is the central city of Bali but not a place with many luxury accommodations, and most Western tourists don’t stay here much. I chose to stay here for 4 nights because I wanted to experience the real lifestyle of Balinese people up close—walking the fresh market in the morning, the bustling 24-hour flower market, and eating street satay in the style of mr.hotsia who loves local food like delicious Balinese satay (for those interested in detailed Balinese cuisine, readBalinese Food and Cuisine)

HotelNakula Familiar InnThe place I stayed is budget accommodation, about 500 baht per night, but it feels like staying at a friend's house. The owner and staff are very friendly, with free Wi-Fi. I like that it’s in the city center, convenient for walking to markets and nearby satay stalls. The owner even taught me some English. This place is also recommended by Lonely Planet. For those who want to deeply experience Bali, I highly recommend this place.Read more about traveling Bali on your own

Kuta Zone: For Sea and Wave Lovers

If you love the sea and surfing like Westerners in Bali, most choose to stay in the Kuta area, which is only about 5 kilometers from Denpasar Airport. This zone is very popular with Western tourists, with wide sandy beaches and strong sea breezes, perfect for surfing. The atmosphere is similar to Patong Beach in Phuket. There are many restaurants, massage shops, and hotels ranging from cheap ones at a few hundred baht to luxury hotels.

For accommodations in Kuta, I haven’t stayed myself but there are good options likeFebri's Hotel & Spawhich is reasonably priced at just over a thousand baht per night and located not far from Kuta Beach. If you want to visit Bali’s beach and want comfortable, affordable accommodation, check this place out. You can see all accommodation prices in the Kuta areahere

Another highlight of the Kuta zone is the southern area, which has Uluwatu Temple, a very famous Hindu temple. It’s a beautiful sunset viewpoint popular with Thai visitors, but you need to take a taxi from Kuta because it’s quite far.

Ubud City: A Paradise for Culture and Nature Lovers

If you don’t like the sea and want to experience Bali in a peaceful, culturally rich way, Ubud is your answer. I stayed here for 2 nights and really liked the atmosphere. It feels like a city of art and nature, with many beautiful accommodations decorated in authentic Balinese style. Most are luxurious and detailed, with a quiet atmosphere perfect for relaxation.

I recommend staying in the Hanuman Street area, which has many foreigners, is not lonely at night, and offers many good restaurants. I stayed atSulendra BungalowThis hotel is a bit far from central Ubud but very peaceful and shady. It’s another interesting option. Although some rooms can be a bit damp, overall it’s good and worth the price.

Getting around Ubud is convenient by renting a bicycle or motorbike, but be careful as the roads are quite narrow and busy. If cycling, I recommend a geared bike because the area is hilly with many ups and downs. For those interested in full accommodation information in Ubud, I recommend reading my articleUbud City, Balithat I wrote.

How to Choose Accommodation That Fits Your Bali Travel Style?

Bali is a very diverse island. If you want to enjoy the sea, swimming, and surfing, choose to stay in Kuta because it’s close to the beach and many water activities. If you like cultural sightseeing, spas, and nature, I recommend Ubud, which is in the island’s center and has a peaceful atmosphere, suitable for those who dislike noise.

If you want to experience the real Balinese lifestyle, walk fresh markets, eat street food, and see local life, choose to stay in Denpasar city. Here you will see flower markets, 24-hour fresh markets, and cheap delicious satay stalls, which I, mr.hotsia, really like.

For those planning to rent a car to travel Bali on your own, I recommend staying in Ubud as a base because it’s in the middle of the island and easy to drive to beaches or other tourist spots. But if you want to fully relax by the sea, choose Kuta as your main base.

A Small Tip from mr.hotsia for Traveling Bali

Bali in May can be quite hot. It doesn’t rain often, but some evenings may have rain. I recommend carrying a small raincoat with you. Also, don’t forget comfortable shoes because you’ll walk a lot when visiting markets or strolling in town.

  • Want to experience real Balinese life? Stay in Denpasar

I chose to stay in Denpasar to absorb the authentic Balinese lifestyle and really liked it. You can try choosing according to your own travel style.
