Eating Grilled Pork Skin Rice in Bali Island, Indonesia

When talking about Bali, many people probably think of wide beaches with strong waves for surfing or unique Hindu temples. But for me, mr.hotsia, food is an equally irresistible charm, especially the grilled pork skin rice I tasted on my latest trip to Bali, which became one of my unforgettable experiences.

Bali, or what many call “Bali Island,” is a province of Indonesia located south of the Java Islands. As a traveler who enjoys exploring independently, I chose to spend time after landing at Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasar) traveling into the city. Although it doesn’t have crystal-clear seas like other islands, Bali has fierce Indian Ocean waves perfect for surfers and a lively beach atmosphere like Kuta, which I have written about before.Traveling from Ngurah Rai Airport Bali to the CityExactly that.

After unpacking and a short rest at my accommodation in Kuta, I started exploring local markets and small restaurants hidden in narrow alleys. That’s where I found a special dish called “grilled pork skin rice” or in Balinese called "Babi Guling," which literally means whole roasted pig.

The Extraordinary Deliciousness of Grilled Pork Skin Rice

When I first tasted it, mr.hotsia must say it was a wow moment. The grilled pork skin here is so crispy it almost crunches in your mouth. The spicy flavor from Hindu spices marinated before grilling fills the air with aroma even before eating. The accompanying sauce is a balanced sweet and sour that enhances the flavor of the tender grilled pork slices. I’ve never had grilled pork like this anywhere else.

Because Bali is an island with a large Hindu population, I learned that this grilled pork dish is not eaten daily but reserved for special occasions such as religious ceremonies or major festivals where locals gather to roast a whole pig as a ritual. Also, local markets have small stalls selling single-plate grilled pork skin rice for locals and tourists to easily enjoy.

I recommend trying it at the fresh markets in Kuta city or Ubud, the art and culture town I have written about before.Ubud Town, BaliBesides experiencing the lifestyle of Balinese people, you also get to taste authentic local food that is hard to find on typical tours.

How to Travel and Experience Eating Grilled Pork Skin Rice with mr.hotsia

Traveling from Ngurah Rai Airport to the city is not complicated. I used local taxis that are ready to take you to every alley you want if you know where to go. The travel is convenient and affordable. I recommend researching travel information beforehand from my article.Traveling from Ngurah Rai Airport Bali to the CitySo you won’t waste time and can travel efficiently.

On the day I went searching for grilled pork skin rice, I passed through a local market full of fresh produce and various spices. The aroma of grilled pork spices hit my nose before I found a small shop with a long queue of locals. I didn’t hesitate to order my first plate and sat eating with the locals. This kind of atmosphere made me feel truly part of Balinese life.

Bali, the City of Culture and Must-Try Food

Bali is not only about beaches or temples but also full of fascinating food culture. If you love food like me, mr.hotsia, I recommend trying local dishes like Balinese satay or uniquely grilled pork. There are many other interesting foods I have shared about before.Balinese CuisineThat will make you fall in love with this island even more.
