Sumenep Cuisine, a small town with flavors beyond its size
When talking about Madura Island, located northeast of Java Island in Indonesia, I, mr.hotsia, must say that this place is not only famous for the Suramadu Bridge or the bull racing festival but also for its local food that is delicious and very budget-friendly for travelers like me, especially in Sumenep town, the main city of this island, where I strolled around and closely experienced the local lifestyle.
Sumenep is not a big or modern city like other cities in Indonesia, but its simplicity made me feel warm and charming. Walking along the small streets lined with tiny eateries selling Indonesian-style rice dishes, known as "nasi," was something I really enjoyed because the food prices here were unbelievably cheap, some dishes costing only 15-20 baht!
What to eat in Sumenep? I love the oxtail soup the most!
I vividly remember a restaurant located opposite the hotel where I stayed called C1 (I recommend anyone visiting Sumenep to try staying here).Hotel Recommendations in Sumenep) offers a variety of made-to-order dishes. The main concept is convenient and quick rice-and-topping servings. I personally liked ordering the oxtail soup here; it was fragrant and richly flavored, making me order it multiple times. This soup is not only delicious but also a rare and cheapest dish I have found during my travels in Indonesia.
Besides that, the local satay, which is a Madura Island original, although I tried many stalls, I didn’t find the taste as impressive as I expected. Still, it was a fun experience because I got to see the traditional satay-making method up close here.
Sumenep Morning Market, charming chaos
If you want to experience the real life of Sumenep locals, don’t miss walking through the morning market.Sumenep Morning MarketThis is a lively open-air market where the unique feature is that people use three-wheeled pedicabs (Becak) as their main transportation for shopping without worrying about traffic jams. I spent several hours browsing fresh goods, vegetables, fish, and fruits sold naturally. Some items were unusual, like very fresh steamed tuna or watermelons hung instead of placed on the ground, which looked cute and novel to me.
This market reminded me of the simplicity of life where people still hold on to traditional culture and self-sufficiency. Walking around and tasting food from small stalls in the market made me feel like I truly absorbed the lifestyle and culture of the Madura people.Mr.Hotsia Enjoyable TravelsIndeed.
Comfort and affordability of accommodation in Sumenep
After tasting food and experiencing the morning market, I returned to rest at the C1 hotel I mentioned earlier. This is a new hotel designed with airy rooms and high ceilings, giving a spacious and comfortable feeling. English is spoken here, making communication much easier. The price is about 450 baht per night, which is very reasonable considering the comfort and safety provided.
The hotel is located near the town center and morning market. A 15-baht ride by Becak pedicab takes you to the market for a morning stroll. It’s a great resting point for travelers who want to experience the local life genuinely without worrying about budget.Click here for details about C1 HotelSure thing.
Madura Island - a small island full of stories and flavors
To briefly describe Madura Island, it covers about 4,250 square kilometers with a population of around 3.65 million, mostly Madurese people. The land is not fertile; most locals engage in small-scale agriculture and coastal fishing as their main occupations. The island is also famous for its bull racing festival, attracting tourists from many places.
What I found very interesting is that travel has become much easier after the Suramadu Bridge connected Madura Island to Surabaya city, allowing me to travel quickly and comfortably from Surabaya to Sumenep.Read more about Madura Island hereTo better understand the context and lifestyle of the people on this island.
