Madura Island, Indonesia: An island of culture and simple life you must experience
Hello, I am mr.hotsia. I had the opportunity to visitMadura Island(Madura), a large island located northeast of Java Island, Indonesia, part of East Java Province. This island is not as well-known as Bali or Jakarta for tourism, but Madura has its own unique charm that I want to share from a traveler's heart.
The island covers over 4,250 square kilometers and has a population of more than 3.6 million people, mostly Madurese who primarily speak the Madurese language. Although this language is not as widespread as Javanese or Indonesian, it is still used in East Java and some surrounding small islands.
Traveling from Surabaya to Madura Island
I started my journey from Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city, to Madura Island, which is connected to Surabaya by the beautiful and long Suramadu Bridge. Previously, the only way was by ferry. The bridge has greatly improved convenience, reducing travel time from several hours to about 4 hours by bus. The bus fare is approximately 160 baht.
The last town on the island: Sumenep, a lifestyle that remains traditional
My destination was the town ofSumeneplocated at the far end of Madura Island. It is a town that still maintains a simple lifestyle closely connected to nature. The bus station is about 3 kilometers from the town center. I took a Becak (three-wheeled pedicab) for about 45 baht into town, which I really enjoyed because riding a Becak here feels like absorbing the local way of life.
Sumenep Morning Market: A market full of life and color
One of my impressions in Sumenep wasthe morning market herewhich is bustling with energy and has a unique atmosphere. You will see locals riding Becaks stopping leisurely at various stalls. Although crowded, there is never traffic congestion because everyone waits patiently and kindly. Vegetables, fruits, fish, and other fresh goods are neatly arranged in unusual ways, such as hanging watermelons instead of placing them on the ground. I loved walking through this market because it felt like truly experiencing the real life of the Madurese people.
Food: Local flavors that are cheap and delicious
Food in Sumenep is very affordable. Walking along many streets, you will find roadside eateries selling rice with curry for about 15-20 baht only. I personally enjoyed the rich-flavored oxtail soup, which is popular among locals. There are also many a la carte restaurants with a variety of tasty dishes. I tried the satay, a specialty of the island, but personally, I was not very fond of it. However, if you want to try, there are many places to choose from. Accommodation in Sumenep: Hotel C1 where I stayed
Since the town is not yet crowded with tourists, accommodations are quite affordable and accessible. I stayed at Hotel C1, which I think is the best value in Sumenep. The rooms have high ceilings, good ventilation, English-speaking staff, and a safe atmosphere, perfect for resting after a long journey. I recommend booking in advance because this hotel is very popular. The price per night is about 450 baht. For more details,Click to see hotel recommendations in SumenepThank you.
Lifestyle and Economy of the Madurese People
I noticed that the land on Madura Island is not very fertile, so most people rely on agriculture such as corn farming and coastal fishing in a self-sufficient economy style. Additionally, the island's bull racing festival is well-known and attracts many tourists. Although the Madurese are generally poor, they still preserve their culture and simple way of life, finding happiness living close to nature.
