Experience the community lifestyle in Sumenep with good accommodations at affordable prices
When talking about towns that still maintain the simplicity and authenticity of Indonesia, I, mr.hotsia, must saySumenepon Madura Island is a very interesting destination. It is far from the hustle and bustle and has few foreign tourists, which keeps the atmosphere truly local. The people here live simply, and the main economy still strongly relies on small-scale agriculture and fishing.
From my experience traveling to Sumenep, one of the most important things is choosing accommodation that meets both comfort and affordability. Since this town is not yet a major tourist destination with many luxury hotels, I chose to stay at theC1hotel, which is considered a very good and worthwhile option for travelers who want to truly experience the local atmosphere.
C1 Hotel: High Ceiling, Spacious, Comfortable Accommodation in Sumenep
C1 Hotel impressed me a lot because the rooms have high ceilings, are spacious and airy, making them feel comfortable and not cramped. The design is simple yet elegant, with a contemporary Indonesian style. Importantly, the staff can communicate in English, which saved me time and reduced worries when asking for information or assistance.
The hotel’s location is not far from the Sumenep morning market (Sumenep Market). It only costs about 15 baht by Becak (three-wheeled pedicab). Riding a Becak here is an experience I really enjoyed because locals actually use them. The lively market atmosphere combined with the busy Becak traffic is the charm of Sumenep that I have never seen anywhere else.
I stayed here for two nights at about 450 baht per night, which is very good value considering the cleanliness and comfort. I recommend booking in advance because this place is gaining popularity and can fill up quickly, especially during festivals or long holidays.
Hotel Surroundings and Getting Around Town
Around C1 Hotel, there are small alleys with several new accommodations at similar prices, so if anyone wants to change the atmosphere, they can easily choose to stay nearby. But I recommend this hotel because it is convenient and has helpful staff.
If you want to walk around downtown Sumenep, it’s not difficult because the distances are short and the roads are walkable. However, most hotels are located in deeper alleys, so you might need to call a Becak or motorcycle taxi sometimes. But I think walking and observing the local lifestyle in Sumenep is definitely worth it.
Local Food in Sumenep and Mr.Hotsia’s Impressions
Food in Sumenep is another highlight I, mr.hotsia, experienced. The food here is cheap and very delicious, especially the street-order dishes near the hotel. I often ordered Indonesian rice with curry for only 15-20 baht, which is very cheap compared to the rich and fresh flavors.
If you have read my article aboutSumenep Local Cuisine, you will see that I especially like the spicy oxtail soup. It has a mellow and unique flavor that is hard to find elsewhere. As for satay, a famous Madura dish, I tried several stalls but none quite matched my taste, though it was still a fun experience.
Morning Market and Fascinating Lifestyle
Sumenep morning market is another place I, mr.hotsia, really like because it remains natural and has a very unique character. People buy goods while sitting on Becaks, bustling without fear of traffic jams. They stop to shop in groups, creating a new and exciting atmosphere for travelers like me.
In this market, you will see fresh seafood from the sea, including steamed tuna, locally grown fruits and vegetables, as well as household items and kitchenware attractively displayed by sellers, such as watermelons hung up instead of placed on the ground. This gives a feeling of truly stepping back into the simple life of Madura people.
Summary of Mr.Hotsia’s Impressions from Sumenep
For anyone wanting to escape the hustle and bustle and experience the true lifestyle of Madura people, Sumenep is a city I truly recommend. The C1 Hotel where I stayed is a very good choice in terms of price and comfort. Traveling to the morning market and tasting local food are experiences I will never forget.
I, mr.hotsia, recommend you visit Madura Island and Sumenep at least once. Seeing people who still uphold traditional ways of life and tasting affordable yet delicious food will make you feel like you have traveled back in time to the true past of Indonesia.
