Rocket Festival in Laos at Xieng Khouang Province
When talking about the Rocket Festival, many people probably think of the grand event in Yasothon Province, Thailand. But this time, mr.hotsia wants to take everyone across the border to experience the traditional charm of the Rocket Festival by the Lao people in Xieng Khouang Province, hidden amidst nature and a simple way of life.
Xieng Khouang Province is located in the eastern part of Laos, bordering Vietnam. The main town where I stayed is Phonsavan, which anyone traveling to the Plain of Jars must pass through first. Getting here is convenient withXieng Khouang Bus Stationwhich has many bus lines connecting to various towns within the province and internationally.
The Rocket Festival here is organized by the local villagers themselves without extravagant ceremonies or government support like in Yasothon. What I encountered was a homely atmosphere of Lao people who hold this event annually to worship Phaya Than, or the god Vassakorn Thepbuth, according to Isan folklore, who is said to be the god controlling rain and fond of fire.
What is interesting and different from Thailand is the very large rockets I saw. The 'rocket san' brought from Vientiane was paraded through the streets of Phonsavan for villagers to admire before being launched at the actual event. The village elder from Pak Muang Lao personally brought it. Although this event is small, it is filled with warmth and friendliness like I have never seen at any other Rocket Festival.
The rocket launching starts with small rockets from each village, progressing to the largest rockets last. The fun part is that if the rocket owner’s rocket fails to launch properly or explodes mid-air, they are playfully thrown into the mud as a penalty. I saw the chairman who brought the 'rocket san' from Vientiane get thrown into the mud too. This is the genuine spirit and true local character that impressed me deeply.
The atmosphere in the afternoon is when villagers gradually arrive to enjoy various activities. There is electronic keyboard music with local singers for villagers to sing and dance to relieve boredom. What surprised me was the balloon-popping stall with a long queue, and something rarely seen in Thailand—a photo booth with traditional fabric backdrops where you can take pictures and get fresh color prints immediately. These small touches bring life and vibrancy to the event.
If you come to the Rocket Festival in Xieng Khouang, don’t miss tasting the local food I found at the event, such as the grilled eggs stall offering small quail eggs steamed until fragrant, eaten with a tangy and spicy dipping sauce and cold Lao beer—a perfect combination. The Lao papaya salad next door was another dish I loved, with a spicy and rich flavor. Especially if you say 'bo ao paeng nua der,' you’ll get a truly spicy and authentic papaya salad without diluted starch.
In this area, there is also a morning market and interesting local lifestyle to explore. I recommend experiencing the atmosphere of the market in Phonsavan town before heading to the Plain of Jars, the main tourist attraction of Xieng Khouang, which I have described in another article.Plain of Jars, Xieng KhouangVisiting here offers a genuine perspective of Laos, not just commercial tourism.
Another important note is safety when traveling in Xieng Khouang Province, as this area was heavily bombed in the past. There are still ongoing efforts to clear unexploded ordnance, but some areas require high caution. I have written about this inBombed City Xieng Khouangto help travelers prepare and stay safe properly.
In summary, the Rocket Festival in Xieng Khouang Province, Laos, is a traditional event full of warmth, community spirit, and simple fun that mr.hotsia personally experienced. The Lao people here take great pride in this tradition. Although the event is not as grand as Yasothon’s, the charm and sincerity of the locals left a lasting impression on me.
If anyone wants to experience the traditional Rocket Festival along with beautiful nature and authentic Lao lifestyle, I highly recommend planning a visit to Xieng Khouang Province. I guarantee you will return with unforgettable memories just like mr.hotsia.
